the move to Catalina was pretty much trouble free for me. I wasn't using any 32 bit plugins anyway and I had no issues with any of my audio plugins. I did have to allow the OS to use a few apps and drivers which took a bit of figuring out and that process could be more intuitive, but that was a one time thing.dayjob wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 1:11 amyeah.. i get it. just seems that it's arbitrary for a .x update that is full of fixes. previous update was mojave friendly and wasn't very long ago. I was expecting a break w/Mojave whenever Logic 11 comes around. that's what i get for expecting thingsEtienne1973 wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 1:03 amI hear you. I'm working with a Mac mini 2012. Officially supported by Catalina. But no Big Sur for me.dayjob wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 12:31 ami don't want to complain either but making everyone go to catalina seems like an arbitrary condition.Etienne1973 wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 12:21 am Logic updates are free since 7 years. So is 10.6. I don't want to complain.
probably just wait for big sur and skip catalina on my laptop anyways.. my desktop is 2010 mac pro and is stuck on mojave anyways.. unless i want to jump through hoops and force the install using http://dosdude1.com/catalina/
On the other hand I can image porting a DAW to a new platform is heavyweight lifting.
Logic developers don't have endless resources to maintain backwards compatibility.![]()
my laptop is 2018 macbook pro and will support catalina and i'm assuming big sur but i've read so much bad news about catalina.. not to mention it might break a few plug ins that haven't been updated for catalina.
i guess i need to do a survey of apps/plug ins and figure out what will break if i go to shitalina
Logic Pro 10.6 is now available

Apple's overall financial situation doesn't necessarily reflect their budget money they spend for the Logic development department.Kypresso wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 5:14 amYou're wrong, apple has BILLIONS of dollars in offshore accounts.Etienne1973 wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 1:03 am Logic developers don't have endless resources to maintain backwards compatibility.
Last time i looked it was about $200 billion, so i'm sure they do have access to endless resources.![]()

Quite interested in step sequencer control with Logic Remote, but since my iPad is too old to run it (iOS 12) and I'm skipping Catalina, it'll have to wait. Maybe next year, when I'll probably upgrade the iPad and Big Sur matures enough, to be safe to install (I hope). I'm pretty happy with 10.5 anyway.

I wonder what you think they do with this money. No company in the world benefits from hoarding their cash forever. Usually companies are into making more money, not less money.Kypresso wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 5:14 amYou're wrong, apple has BILLIONS of dollars in offshore accounts.Etienne1973 wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 1:03 am Logic developers don't have endless resources to maintain backwards compatibility.

That includes the company YOU are working for BTW. Just saying.
Imagine a company just hoards its money somewhere. That doesn't create any money, opposed to reinvesting it, buying shares, doing bonds, or anything else. Would be super stupid.

Some of Apple's investor have been saying the same thing for a while but there is something to be said to not be beholden to market forces. Apple can move anywhere they want and fail if they have to and that won't take down the whole company like those who are only about growth at the cost of everything else. that money sitting in the bank is one of the reasons why its one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Look at ATT they bought TimeWarner, DirectTV etc and now a few short years after they have to sell a lot of those assets because they spent way too much and have no clue how to make them profitable. Sometime having money sitting in the bank for a rainy day is the best course of action and Apple has had rainy days before.

That really makes no sense, no matter how you slice it. That's not how companies work, or how people in charge think. It may impress stock holders, but, that's about it really.
And, let's say Corona hits Apple really hard (it's BS, but, let's just imagine it). No money in the world would help them then. You can see that with lots of companies who were supposedly doing well, and got into real trouble when a few things don't work out. It's quite unlikely for Apple, I'm just saying that cash on the bank doesn't solve anything. And, it's not of any use there either.

Stuff from the big developers should work fine but it seems like the smaller developers got screwed. When I updated, every plugin that I have that was either free or low cost "could not be opened” because the developer wasn’t certified. I guess you have to pay some toll to apple for them to allow your plugins to work now. It seems many indie developers wouldn’t or couldn’t pay that toll. I am only assuming that there is an actual fee but I don’t know really. Obviously there is some kind of hurdle that the big boys could easily clear (NI, Plugin Alliance, etc...) but that the smaller, one man shop types couldn’t (Full Bucket, Airwindows, etc...)Ploki wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 4:46 pm what's everyones gripe with catalina? been working smooth as butter here with all 3rd party plugs i have
There are workarounds and fixes but when I saw the number of plugins that were affected and realized it was all small developers that were impacted, I just said forget it and rolled back to Mojave. Absolutely nothing wrong with Mojave other than the fact that it derails the upgrade train for everything else if you choose to stay there.

"When I updated, every plugin that I have that was either free or low cost "could not be opened” because the developer wasn’t certified. I guess you have to pay..." (I saw someone assert it was a $99 [annual] fee yesterday)
True, but here nearly every time the 'workaround' was simply tell Privacy in Preferences to just do it, so it's three clicks yez don't normally have.
One thing I tried to install won't (without some kind of advanced tweak in Terminal), BFD2, but fxpansion gave me its library gratis (the reason I thought to install it, a large lib), so not a prob.
It looked like TDR Proximity wouldn't install but the VST version did (I did something in Terminal here) and I quit hassling with it, I don't need both (VEP does both, or in Cubase it's the VST anyway).
So, I moved to Catalina in June, because new computer and I was up and running in under one day with a couple of afterthoughts I sorted later.
I lost two 32-bit things I would ever use, and one of them has since been replaced with a x64 plugin.

Well apparently that's how Apple think since they've been hoarding money since 2010.

Ridiculous - this is a bug fix release, it should therefore be provided for everyone who installed the version that has the bugs it fixed - that is logical.

Because it means many plugins and instruments I have, including Metasynth, the Virus Ti plugin and editor, Clavia G2 Modular editor and Audiomulch, will no longer work.Ploki wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 4:46 pm what's everyones gripe with catalina? been working smooth as butter here with all 3rd party plugs i have

Apple have always had a huge cache of money supposedly not being used. IMO any company that's as into R&D as Apple is, would have this if they could. I don't think there's any good reason to read into it any more than that.apoclypse wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 7:32 pmchk071 wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 5:21 pmFor... who to charge it off exactly?apoclypse wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 5:13 pm Some of Apple's investor have been saying the same thing for a while but there is something to be said to not be beholden to market forces. It has a new feature as mentioned, and probably includes a lot more than bug fixes, including Apple Silicon compatibility etc. I can't run Catalina on my Mac Pro, but I'm not pissed about this; the main reason I'm looking into Logic again is it's faster rate of development than other DAWs IMO. This is very clearly tied to leveraging new technologies, and my 09 modified Mac Pro is not new tech. I don't think any company is interested in pissing off people in hopes they buy more of their product. So I expect it's likely that there are reasons I'm not aware of.aMUSEd wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 9:14 pmRidiculous - this is a bug fix release, it should therefore be provided for everyone who installed the version that has the bugs it fixed - that is logical.
