Uninstalled. I totally get the connection being required and the data scraping, as per the agreement with the download, as noted a few posts back:
"The software will occasionally gather non-sensitive information about your computer's specifications (cpu, ram, screen, etc.) for the sole statistical purposes. We guarantee that no personal information will be gathered nor collected by GSi. At the same time, a promotional screen may be shown with useful information about other GSi products, offers, or news worth checking out."
But it stops there and doesn't mention what you need to find on the site, also noted a few posts back:
"The data collected includes exclusively the following items:
1. OS name and platform (x86 or x64)
2. Computer name
3. CPU vendor & model, number of cores, speed
4. Memory size
5. User name
6. Language and region
7. Screen resolution"
I would say don't leave "user name" out of the first available list, even if there's an etc. there, if you use it, even if you list it on the site. The first list showing up , in a way, serves to deflect people from looking for a second list. I would consider user name pushing the "no personal info" boundary, but even if that's incorrect I don't uninstall a lot of freebies with data scraping but I did this one, if only for the poor communication with the two not identical lists. Even computer name is not standard for the ones I let stay. Not the biggest deal and to each their own, but enough to not convince me I needed to keep it installed.

I was going to make a scale on a graph how much I now care, but since the display can't show anything smaller than a pixel unit it's impossible...sinkmusic wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 6:11 pm I understand the concern, but still : it sounds great, thank you GSI for the freebie!

A rather knee jerk reaction to his lack of being forthright about it in the first place.onerob wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 9:31 pm Developer response and clarification here. It's... punchy.

I was interested in the product. Now knowing the details, I'm not.
Please feel free to take your ball and go home....

I might have messed up with the communication, but I can't believe this keeps bouncing from forum to forum.
I just replied on another forum, please see my answers on this GearSlutz thread.
VariSpeed does not require any internet connection. Even if the computer is disconnected from the internet, VariSpeed keeps working normally.
No personal information is collected. And no, computer name and user name are not personal information.
EDIT: after further discussion, I decided to exclude these two fields from data collection, and I owe my apology to everyone for being too negligent not to know that these two fields may indeed represent personal information in case the person's name is used in the username field or included in the computer name.
VariSpeed is not adware, it will only show a promo page with GSi products, every once in a while and only if an internet connection is available. You will never see a banner that tells you how you enlarge your penis. And no, it doesn't "track" anything, it's not like making a search on Google or posting stuff on Instagram!
I'm sure at least half the plugins and the other software you all have on your computers collects information without you even knowing. Even when something crashes and you hit the button "send this report" you are sendin tons of information to Apple, to Microsoft... whoever...

I saw your reply and I commented on the KVR plugins page. I was taken in by the accusations and nearly uninstalled but I've changed my mind now, I'm keeping it. Thank you very much for this nice plugin.ZioKiller wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 10:02 pm I might have messed up with the communication, but I can't believe this keeps bouncing from forum to forum.

Unfortunately there's a warez site that not only is sharing a "cracked" version of this plugin, but is also spreading false information. But people believe a warez website more than the developer himself, what can I do?
Btw, I have updated the product page adding a further disclaimer under the "System requirement" section, like someone suggested in this thread.
I'm very sorry I messed up with the communication, I thought that saying "your computer's specification" was clear enough to justify the "etcetera".

Can you please tell me where did you read that "it's pushing ads"? The word "advertising" is never used.Dozius wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 4:26 pm Collecting usage data is one thing, but pushing ads? Yeah, no thanks.
The EULA says "a promotional screen may be shown with useful information about other GSi products, offers, or news worth checking out." which is different from "pushing ads". No ads, just this page. It's different from the average app that shows you a banner with undesired ads compulsively.
