This thread has gotten derailed, the point is that this chip design means that passive cooling is practical for general use cases. See the numerous youtubers who edit all their video on an iPad.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Maybe. For performance, I'd take a real desktop CPU over such a underspec'd overpriced mobile CPU every day though.
Guess for Apple it's rather about making the devices as slim as possible.

Do you really mean the M1? Overpriced?chk071 wrote: Sat Nov 14, 2020 11:07 am Maybe. For performance, I'd take a real desktop CPU over such a underspec'd overpriced mobile CPU every day though. Guess for Apple it's rather about making the devices as slim as possible.

It will take a while for people to twig that these M1 machines are actually the budget option.Etienne1973 wrote: Sat Nov 14, 2020 11:30 amDo you really mean the M1? Again, assuming the specs and benchmarks really translate into real world performance.

1. All processors are quiet. Cooling systems are not.
2. All modern laptop/desktop processors are literally designed to slow down if they heating too much under the load.
So he was either implying apple made a passively cooled system to create an incentive to buy actively cooled ones, or he was just stating absolutely pointless facts that everyone knows.
Neither is constructive nor informative

I will see how it goes in a week or so with a new M1 Macbook Pro.
The only thing i wonder is if on a M1 mac inside the ARM version of Logic i can run my non-ARM plug-ins. I do not use much third party plug-ins anymore but there are a few i really will not loose.
I guess i have to wait and test it within the 14 days and if it not works i might send it back.
I was planning to wait for a new 16" but i am in need of a new right now and i have no trouble with the size and i guess the 16" would be 4k+ for my configuration.
(Or i will resell it again for a new one then, good thing is macs are great to resell here for not much loss if they are not too old and used).
I already updated my old (late 2013) to Big Sur and Logic 10.6 and to my surprise all plug-ins runs fine so far. It seems to even perform a bit better (maybe placebo).
The option to run iOS apps on mac seems a gimmick for some but i really like that.
That said, a lot iOS music app developers already said to opt out for now. Doh´

Oh, good to know since i heard different things about this that you either have to run a non-ARM DAW via Rosetta 2 with your intel plug-ins on a M1 device or you have a native ARM DAW (which seems only Logic so far?) but then you could not run intel plug-ins at all. So if they still get "translated" via Rosetta 2 i will give it a try.....knowing that early next year maybe a M2 or M1X inside a 16" mac blows this thing away, lol.
But nothing to loose, 6-7 days work per week still and no chance to do something in my free time due to lockdown, so i just pulled the trigger on a 13" macbook pro M1.
However, even if it will be a slow start i think this new chip will change a lot and i will stay with Apple on this (and i am NO Apple fanboy, i just use what works best for me).

Logic has a built-in bridge. I guess other DAWs will follow suit. Transition is set by Apple for around 2 years but regarding musicians I'm sure it will take more time.

...oh and of course we have to see how it performs, especially under Rosetta 2 then.
As long as it beats my i7 quadcore 2.0 Ghz from late 2013 i am fine with that.
My old also just has 8 GB RAM so i am fine with 16 GB (shared whatever it means)RAM as well so far.

Its going to be suck it sand see for programs and plugins that utilise newer instruction sets and processor features that allow them to run faster

In Logic: yes
Other hosts: the first tests from another dev have shown that ARM hosts do not longer detects non-ARM plugins. Ceck out the thread in the developer forum for more info

Around 30-40% slower seems to be what several other devs of plugins have measured. This is pretty good for an emulationCinebient wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 7:37 am ...oh and of course we have to see how it performs, especially under Rosetta 2 then.
