Hey,

What's that called where a song or and album, or whatever... has a certain sound to it?

Not like an individual bass drum sound design type of thing, but the sound of all the sounds going on in the song, and the way it is perceived for example. And not just like a mastering job, or a mixing job, but the overall sound.

Example, the Specials sound like Rush, or even liek Pantera CFH. Or like the Dead Kennedys.

Those bands have certain qualities that sound like one another. Even though they are not related to eachother other than _the Idea im thinking of.

I'm looking into this because I have in mind an idea for myself, and I'd like to make sure i'm not copyright infringing.

I'm thinking, close to genre-then sub-genre-then band, and then actually finally close to, overall sound.

Thanks!
Anthony

used to be (50's/60's) referred to as a ('their') "trademark sound" (or 'style'), as that generally unmistakable and/or 'consistent' thing (characteristic/quality) that made them stand out and unique, as distinguished from other peoples/groups efforts, or skill-set. Essentially that "it factor" that makes a person, group or thing, 'iconic'.

I would call it a personal style. Styles are not copyrighted btw... But if you are too close, you‘ll have to fight for being recognized at all... Sometimes a reference can help in the beginning, but could turn into a burden...

are you talking about when a bands has a certain "sound", so if you heard a song, you would say "oh that's xxxxx"

or do you mean a band has a sound very similar to another band, and when you hear them, you think it's the other band?
