Hi,

I just wonder if Steinberg maintain support of "not latest" version of Cubase for future MacOSs.

For example, if I got Cubase 10.5, will I be able to install it on MacOS Big Sur ?

Thanx

I would be shocked if they, or anyone did. That's a lot of work for no money.

Usually, they don't provide such support.

Depending on the changes introduced by the latest version of the o.s., the previous versions of Cubase (but this holds true for any software) may keep on working fine for a few releases of the operating system (despite the lack of official support) or you can experience bugs or you may even be unable to run it at all.

MacOS is currently going through a lot of changes because of the switch to ARM so, even if (the previous version of) a software like Cubase works on a newer version of the operating system, I wouldn't really expect it to keep on working for a lot of new operating system releases to come. It may work, with a good dose of luck, on the o.s. version released the very next year (so, for example, Cubase 10.5 released in late 2019 -> Big Sur released in late 2020), but I wouldn't hold my breath on anything to keep on working on a bigger time span (there's still a chance it may still work, but it's more likely it won't).

It has already been so for the past few years, while Apple was preparing MacOS for the cpu switch...

Currently, most of the companies making audio software are stating that you should wait before upgrading to Big Sur. They say this every year, but this year it looks especially important. I usually wait between 6 month to a year before upgrading MacOS (Apple still provides security fixes for the very previous version os MacOS), so the new version of MacOS is not really an issue unless you need to buy a new computer now.

By the way, I expect updates/upgrades from virtually every software vendor to ensure compatibility with Bug Sur / ARM... I hope it will be as easy and flawless as possible, but I still think it will mark a line on compatibility...

Considering it's Cubase I wouldn't even buy 11, because Big Sur / ARM support won't come sooner that 12 and won't be retrofitted to 11 or 11.5. At least I wouldn't expect it.

"because Big Sur / ARM support won't come sooner that 12"
is that a fact. Unless you have a serious inside track and violating NDA, it isn't but conjecture

AFAIK, Cubase releasing a new whole version number means the previous number version is finished, highly doubtful there will come a revision.
