Not to restart this since you all kissed and made up. I just fail to see anything controversial about what you said? Literally arguing that since you can email them to stop your order before they draw money when it's released it's not really like they're collecting money? The internet is a weird place.

Dunno either, think none of them actually saw context of the convo that happened on page 2, than saw later response and focused on that purely, probably draw some extra conclusions about my motives and all that jazz, yeah, that's internet, people often just take your response out of context to prove some point you never try to make often attacking your personality and motives, think it's called straw man with ad hominem. Don't take it so personal. You made a comment on page 2 and then you got consequences, which is a fact of life.
Keep going as you feel and stand your point as you see fit. I find KVR much easier than day to day business routine in real life.

So how long have you been using Suite for, incl. the demo period. Don't you think you got your money's worth by now? Also, a) you don't have to upgrade, b) you won't have to really pay for 2-3 months at least judging by previous betas.

So I think "screw them" is a bit harsh.

You bet I'd be pissed if they allowed people to buy Suite 10 at a discounted rate earlier in the year and then offered those same people a free or significantly cheaper upgrade 6 months later, while muggins here paid for v9 and then for the upgrade to v10 and then again to v11.

Ableton are a privately owned company developing commercial software to sell at a profit, I don't understand why people are so upset that they are charging money for an upgrade 3 years on from the previous version. If you buy software 3/4 into the typical development cycle of a product, you have to accept the risk that a newer version might release shortly after your own purchase and that you may not qualify for a free/discounted upgrade. Where should Ableton draw the line here? One, three, six, twelve months from purchase? Whatever they do, they are guaranteed to piss people off. If they only offered one month last time but they offer three months this time around, how is that fair to anyone who missed out last time around? To loyal customers who have supported them over the years by paying every time, how is fair that someone who only just bought the software for the first time 1-12 months ago is entitled to a free upgrade but you as a loyal customer who has invested potentially thousands of euros/dollars/pounds over the years are not?

It's not fair and can't ever be, so why bother getting upset about it. 30% off 10 plus 20% off the upgrade to 11 is still a better deal then people who bought full price say two years ago.

Your forgetting the law that was passed that all software companies must produce a large free .5 update before updating to an integer (Steinberg are obviously excluded from this law as they invented VST)

Funny, I seem to recall buying 8 Standard and 9 Standard myself, before I upgraded to 10 Suite and got barely 5 months of "value" out of it, so please re-holster your measuring stick.

Being asked to pay twice for Suite in a 5 month span is freaking idiotic. There is no way I would have purchased the upgrade if I knew we wouldn't make it to 10.5, much less 10.2.

I also purchased a Push 2 right around the same time. Now I'm hosed on updates for that too, because they are bundled into the software updater.

It's piss poor. The only people who wouldn't understand this are those for whom this isn't a MAJOR cost outlay. It took me years to afford Suite and invest pretty fully in Ableton, and then no time at all to get nickel and dimed further.

Your copy still works, if you delayed so much your update to 10 then you can delay to update to 11.

Your copy still works, if you delayed so much your update to 10 then you can delay to update to 11.

They won't be seeing any more money from me at this point. I didn't own the Push before, either, so not the same analysis.

Simple story: don't half-life your product (based on your product development history), do a non-obvious liquidation sale, then release a new product and expect people not to be pissed.
