Hi,

I haven't received any emails at all from them recently.

However, I did just try guessing the URL for the $99 special offer on their website...

:-o

EDIT: URL removed because it appears to point to a cheaper price for ACID 5, but points to a different product at checkout (see below).

BTW, (initial impressions after a few minutes are) try the demo before you buy because ReWire slave mode (to SX3) has a few pops and clicks when looping, and the .NET and MDAC 2.8 requirements make it feel like a webapp is being installed (and it also adds a number of services in XP), and the thing crashes many times when detecting VST plugins (no change from ACID 4).

Also, loop preview in media manager was a bit buggy, disabled that, also previewing ACID wavs in explorer seems to be a bit slower.

I haven't tried rendering anything with SX3 yet.

Good old sony - just ordered what I thought was Acid Pro 5 upgrade and it is telling me that I have purchased a Platinum Support Plan whatever the f**k that is.

Emailed them for a response and it looks like I am at the back of a very long cue. I have now asked for my money back and I will now be getting an upgrade to my Ableton Live 3 instead.

I removed the link, if I find the real link (which shows the correct product name at checkout) I will post it.

If anyone gets the email with the cheap upgrade offer link please post it as Sony don't appear to be sending me emails.

Thanks
:D

I had an email from Sony and used this to try and purchase the product - I think there has been an obvious cock up with the link - hopefull not many other people will have this problem.

Thanks for the info regarding Acid installing services. The demo does this too - yuck! Why would anyone want SQL server taking up 30 megs of RAM and running in the background even when you aren't using ACID?

Fortunately, it seems you can disable all 3 services (MSSQL* and SQLAgent), and turn off Media Manager in Acid to no ill effect. This speeds up Acid boot time considerably.

Also, initial findings with Sonar 4.0.1 are no clicks in ReWire at 4.4ms (Event Layla using WDM).

I will do more investigation if the other applications installed by Acid 5 affect anything. I'd bet .NET 1.1 will be harmless.

Also, I never received a Sonic Foundry upgrade email - all I've seen is the $150 price on the website.

I upgraded from the website last night,, and received my upgrade email today,,.

Anyway,, the install took over an hour because it hung the first time trying to install the new Media apps and SQL and lots of other crap. Then it got into my Vst folder on startup which has over 100 vsts so I had to wait for that. So I crashed it and renamed my Vst folder,, however their appears to be no way to change the default Vst folder,, so i have to rename it on start up everytime.

Great app but lousy minded programmers who designed the startup.

What a wretched upgrade... unless I'm missing something you still can't use send FX with VSTis! I uninstalled the demo after 10 minutes on my system.

I finally got an email with this link: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/p ... ycode=6394

This is what the offer is: For a limited time*, upgrade and receive your choice of any title from the Standards Collection of loop CDs, a $59.95 value, free. Upgrades start at $149.95.

I'd rather have the upgrade for $99 and have them keep the loop CD...but that's just me...

What crappy news.

I used XP-Lite to trim out (what I view as) unnessecary crap from my XP installation. I do *Not* want any of that crap running on my music computer. .NET? WTF?

I paid about $150 for Acid Pro 4.0 before it was taken over by Sony, who inflated the price enormously. I like Acid a lot as a sketch pad for compositions and trying out loop combinations, but I cannot imagine spending another $150 just for an upgrade. I hope Sony sells off the Acid franchise to someone who will price it more comparably to the Fruity Loops line, which I think is actually a better value for what it does.

Given the above issues with acid, which of the following would then be the best, most cost effective solution for looping:

1) acid 5
2) Flstudio 5
3) sonar 4
4) adobe audition (a.k.a. cool edit)

Post

That's a difficult decision - it depends on your needs. You'd have to use a demo of each to determine what's best for you.

I want Acid 5 badly, but for one and only one reason - to Rewire to Sonar. While Sonar has all the looping power of Acid, Sonar (and all other looping tools) lacks one vital feature - a paint tool. Since Acid forces one loop per track, it is simple to paint loops without first starting from an existing clip.

Note for people who installed the Acid 5 demo or full project - go to Windows Update!

It turns out there is a critical patch for both .NET 1.1, and Data Access Components.

Do not blame Sony for these critical updates - in the case of .NET 1.1, I downloaded the latest version from Microsoft itself, and that version does not contain the critical updates!
