I am on the lookout for a cheap, versatile VSTi. I'm mainly going to use it to play live to myself, trying out different sounds inspires me, but I have recently been dabbling in tiny bit of audio production. I am not very serious about my piano playing, so it should be under 20$.

If it currently isn't on sale but often gets good sales or cheap deals on the sell/buy forum, please post it anyway; I'm not in a hurry :). I am currently looking at getting Xpand!2, due to its thousands of presets and low price.

What DAW do you use?

Post

reaper on Linux

Edit: most VSTs which don't have Linux versions still work on Linux with some trickery, so suggest windows plugins too

Synthmaster may be an idea. You.can use the player first and take it from there if you want to. The presets are very good. Currently on sale. May be a bit more than 20 bucks, but it is worth to take a look.

Post

Synthmaster One is available for $29 at the moment.

Thanks, Synthmaster seems pretty good after trying the demo.

Synth1 is free and very versatile for synth sounds, plus about 10,000 banks to download also for free

Synthmaster and Xpand2 are also recommended :)

Oooh, synth1 is pretty cool. Doesnt have the aucustic sounds of xpand and synthmaster, but its free!

Actually, thinking about it, I'd rather use Synth1 for now, and save up to get some really good synth. :)

I love what I'm getting from uhe.
They're free and have linux versions.

Yes. By the way, Hybrid by Air may also be interesting for you.

+1 for synthmaster one. Check out vital on 24th (pretty sure you know it by now, native Linux version exists). Valhalla stuff is usually good. If you buy synthmaster one from plugin boutique you can get one of four plugins for free. Reason lite doesn't work on Linux even with wine and you need internet connection active to use it, Drumazon is pretty good deal. Check out cherryaudio stuff, 29 dollars for both of their new plugins, voltage modular nucleus is free for a while (idk till when, but it's a sweet deal). I use Linux myself and I've tested all the stuff I mentioned via linvst. I haven't tested synthmaster one but synthmaster player works flawlessly so it should work without a hassle as well. (Btw synthmaster player is on sale in plugin boutique for 5 dollars, plus you get a free plugin of your choice).

Also ilok stuff doesn't general work well with Linux.

Surge is a hell of a thing, free, and Linux friendly...

“Acoustic sounds”? Not very serious about your “piano playing”? You would like “thousands of presets”?

Honestly, it seems to me that what you might really want is something like a SFZ/SF2 player. Essentially, a “rompler”. You can get freeware plugins for linux that will do that. And there are thousands of free soundfont libraries on the internet.

Unless you are genuinely interested in making electronic music featuring a bunch of synthesis: EDM, ambient, etc.

Just a thought. Let me know if I’m way off the mark. :)
