WatchTheGuitar wrote: Mon Nov 16, 2020 2:17 am I’m been tempted to get a second hand Yamaha SG1000 in the new year once I’ve paid off my recent synth purchase. John McGeoch’s main guitar model. I may end up trading a couple of guitars I rarely play anymore - a Variax JTV59 and a 90’s Tokai strat.
I still have a few not shown including my Yamaha Variax that also collects dust. I bought it as a a be all end all because I was going through my everything must go phase. Fortunately (or unfortunately) All my higher end guitars went first and got a high enough price on them that It didn't wipe out the herd entirely.
Yeah I like the Variax, but it’s a faff to remember to keep the battery charged and my ear got tuned in to the artificiality and once I got that focus I couldn’t listen to it happily anymore. As a LP style guitar it’s not bad, but the humbuckers aren’t great considering it was nearly a grand when I bought it.

Honestly I like the neck on the Yamaha Variax standard. And that's where it all stops. I hate the tone from the magnetic pups/body. It sounds like crap even though I do like Pacifica's. The artificiality of the modeled instruments is just crap to my ears. It may be that the piezo pups are just to close to the strings causing irreversible clipping/ distortion at the point of conversion but it sounds worse than anything in my collection. What's more is... I've had my fair share of strats, tele's lp's and more. I've had a few gibson boxes and played more. If that's the best tone they can get from those instruments they really really need to get better builds of the instruments for sampling and resample them.

I wanted to love the tones. I was prepared for the latency and could accept it. Now I'm ashamed to sell it even though it still looks and plays great.

My very first guitar I got earlier this fall. I wanted cheap as it was testing the waters, "will I actually commit and put in the time and effort to learn to play". To my absolute delight, the answer is yes! I train almost daily and making real progress, and loving every minute of it.

No pimping done to it yet, but the bidge saddles and tuners are on the list when I swap to heavier strings.

The Taylor and the Bigsby Casino have been sold. If all goes ok with my health, I may get an Epi 335 Deluxe in May.

My current fave is the Guild F-40 I bought in August. Deep bass, volume goes to 11, very playable out of the box, excellent workmanship, MiA, just a great acoustic guitar sitka/hog. It is a replacement for the Taylor 320. Taylors leave me cold for some reason. Bought 3 over the years, and sold them all.

I've also bought a set of hot noiseless Fender pups to take out the current tex-mexes, which I find lacklustre. Pulled it out from under the bed for the first time in months to do a 'do I sell or keep?' Keep, with better pups seems the way to go.

You dropped the bomb baby.
Was wondering when some of our more serious collectors would start posting pics. Even older pics of larger collections.

It's funny since I started this thread most of my guitars have been getting a serious workout. I'll go through four or five a day. Some of them that I haven't taken to well to in the past (Epi-joe pass/ tele blacktop) I've gotten more into. And oddly I've actually started to think about semi's again (like a 339) something that hasn't pulled my ear in a long time.

I like the es339 as it's a thinner neck than the current LP profile and it's also a smaller frame. Jon Herrington who played with Steely Dan for 20+ years touring handling all the guitar work that wasn't Walter Becker used that as his primary axe.

Very nice acoustic collection, not familiar with Lakewood, but they seem to be well known English luthiers. One day I hope to get a guitar from Fylde who made a wonderful sounding and looking acoustic Robyn Hitchcock used on stage in a live concert video.

It wouldn't be a bad thing if... John or John (not to point fingers) would show their collections here.

Lakewoods are made here in Germany. That 12 string in my pics is the best acoustic 12er I've played. The other Lakwood in my pics is an M-18, which is alpine spruce over ovankol.
In my experience, the 18 line is the best bang for the buck from Lakewood.
My collection is good, well, beyond 'good,' and I'm grateful for it. Especially like last night, pulling my Strat out after at least a year, and falling in love all over again with the neck and the tone. I expect good things from the noiseless pups. I was going to sell it toward a semi, but I'll get that for my birthday when I'm (fingers crossed) recovering from the chemo.

And if you want a clear bell-like acoustic guitar tone on a recording, the M-18 is perfect.

Stand corrected, they look quality. Didn’t know about the chemo, bloody hipster getting something that isn't Covid  Good luck with everything

Hi everybody. That's my lovely Ibanez AEG50-IBH. I got her about half a year ago and I'm still madly in love with her. Before I was playing on a Martin Backpacker, as I was traveling a lot. The Martin was a good guitar (despite what some people think about it), but it just can't compare to this beauty (I simply love blue guitars  )

Of course all good guitars need a name and this one is no exception. Hers is Aisling. It's Irish for 'dream' and it fits her on so many levels. Ok I stop rambling about her now. Wish you all an amazing day :)

Glad you had a good time with an Ibanez. The only one I’ve ever owned is a 12 string acoustic that had the worst setup I’d ever seen. Dead frets, deadspots, just completely awful. The place I got it from online went bust just before lockdown so I’ve not been able to return it or get it sorted at a guitar store (I’m handy incapable and tend to break things more when trying to fix them).
