I'd double this. It's the more easy to get into Cubase which doesn't require a USB dongle too.
I wouldn't recommend Reaper, but, we're all different in regards of our workflow preferences.
Or this. The only one which seems serious is Cakewalk by Bandlab though. But, I'm sure that'd be a good recommendation.

On a Mac, I would go Logic.
Another consideration is market share and using it on the job. This is where Pro Tools, Cubase or Live give an advantage to upgrade the own Curriculum Vitae. I mention this because it can be an argument in selecting a DAW.

It's also an argument for the availability of tutorial videos and such stuff. Much more available for the big ones than for the small ones.ralfrobert wrote: Mon Nov 23, 2020 4:34 pm Another consideration is market share and using it on the job. On the other hand, the tutorials by Kenny Gioia explaining Reaper are both great and free. He is also adding videos all the time.chk071 wrote: Mon Nov 23, 2020 4:35 pm It's also an argument for the availability of tutorial videos and such stuff. Cubase.
Reaper is tedious imo. I started with Reaper and got so frustrated. Just get Cubase Element and learn the workflow (it's fast).

streaming account and everything from Protoculture (best value by far)
https://www.sonicacademy.com/courses/cu ... er-level-1
https://www.sonicacademy.com/courses/cu ... er-level-2
then the collections of the best free plugins videos, google L "protoculture top-5 site:sonicacademy.com"
I wouldn't waste time learning free DAWs, Cubase and the best free plugins
ps. Cubase hasn't got any modulation support/or modular environment(where you wire different VSTs together), if you need such a feature I would vote for MUX
the same issue with modular fx plugins, I've found Zebrify best

effect version of Zebra, https://www.kvraudio.com/product/zebrify-by-u-he
the skin of it above is https://plugmon.jp/product/massive-modular/

- https://www.mutools.com/mux-product.htmlIncludes hundreds of inspiring instruments and effect presets.
Freely mix MUX modules and VST plug-ins without limits.
Modulate any VST parameter with any of the MUX modulators like LFO, ADSR, Multi-Point Envelope, ...
Audio-rate Parameter Modulation.
Deep modular editing lets you build your own synths and effects, including nice front panels.

Sorry, but this is like asking us to recommend Pepsi or Coke to your friend. Some are going to say Pepsi, some will say Coke, others will say Sprite, or Dr. Pepper, or... you get the point.
What does your friend want to do with these DAWs?
Also, can you clarify "beginner" for us, please? A complete newb with no musical experience whatsoever, or just new to computer-based music production?

In that sense, I would recommend MULAB to a beginner. It's easy to use and it has all effects and a great synth and even a deeper modular system on board (as deep as good mineral water comes from).
