The Lost Poet: Dante's Inferno Cantos 1 and 2

it was a little to upbeat for me to equate it with Dante's inferno, which
to me should be dark and miserable most of the time.

100% agreed once he goes down through the Gates of Hell, but this one directly links to the text of the first 2 verses where he's still on the surface of the earth...very different part of the narrative.

That explains it - the video game is VERY, VERY different to the original poem text! Original text is actually much weirder and NOT all doom and gloom at all!

No, this is nothing to do with that game in any way whatsoever!

It's part of a world-wide project where 30+ composers are collaborating to create music based on the actual poem from the 1300s! It'll all be released on the world in a couple of months

I thought the first section had a "Chinese" vibe, something like Sakamoto's Theme from The Last Emperor, although I could be mistaken, probably 'cos haven't heard it for close to 25 years. Something about that violin sound (or was it an erhu)?

The composition was terrific all the way through, and I liked the way that the entire piece hung together. The sounds used were excellent, as was the mix.

It seemed a lot shorter than 7 minutes.

Had a listen to Sakamoto's Theme - there is a definite 'melodic flow' connection with my first section...the rise and fall more than anything else.

Definitely violin, not Erhu, although the melody and the way I've mixed it does give a slightly exotic sound to it...wasn't intentional! (It's actually a string quartet playing mainly in unison).

That's gotta be a good thing!

Yeah, it is very interesting listening to the different approaches...a few too many, for me, rely on 'the reverb panning from left to right' and other more relatively esoteric techniques...nothing wrong with that at all (been there many times), but...

My experience over the years is that the 'general public' (whatever that actually means) do prefer something which has at least some more tangible and easily accessible aspects as well!

Tell that to Virgil the Roman poet...his spirit had been hanging around waiting for Dante to have his midlife crisis for over 1000 years!

Yeah...I'm honour bound to listen to them all really...doing 5 a day, just like me fruit and veg!

Just finished the 1911 film - which was actually very interesting...might also watch it in its original silent form as well!
