Yesterday I bought Excalibur from EA /Izotope for 8€ from Plugin Boutique. Soundwise it seems to be an exceptional plugin, maybe diffucult to use though. Hat not yet the time to explore it in detail, but sound is oretty good.

I was going to buy it too after reading about it here,it really seems a bargain. But then I saw it uses iLok... I'll pass then.SamDi wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 8:36 pm Yesterday I bought Excalibur from EA /Izotope for 8€ from Plugin Boutique. Don‘t get, why iLok is such a deal breaker for so many. I don‘t like, if a physical stick is needed, since I am often on a notebook, so I avoid these stuff too. But licenses just needing the iLok SW, works very well with all plugins on several computers (OK, the EA stuff is just a license for 1 machine). I prefer iLok very much over proprietary solutions, like e.g. Codemeter. I mean at the end it‘s your decision, but I cannot understand, why this is for so many such a big blocker...mabian wrote: Sat Nov 28, 2020 10:23 pmI was going to buy it too after reading about it here,it really seems a bargain. Have you read about problems with blue screen of death or ilok server not working and preventing the plugins from being used and/or authorized? This is it for me... luckily it hasn't yet happened to me, but I would like to avoid the risk from the start ...SamDi wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 1:19 pmDon‘t get, why iLok is such a deal breaker for so many. No I did not hear before of it to be honest. I use iLok since a long time on both Mac and Windows and my personal experience is consistently positive. It just works. That's why I wonder.mabian wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 1:51 pmHave you read about problems with blue screen of death or ilok server not working and preventing the plugins from being used and/or authorized? The only issue (I just had it) is, that a license destination can drop away (e.g. my Macbook changed the Location ID after getting repaired and I restored the backup), then you have to contact your vendors and asking them for resetting your activations manually.
That's kind of inconvenient, but far better as e.g. for Sylenth1, where you have 10 emergency resets and when they were used, then your license is worthless.

Back around 2004 I think I had BSOD's with iLok software version. I use the 1 and 2 hardware only these days and have since a few years after the 2004 incident that I was having issues with. I haven't had a single BSOD from the dongle, ever. It just works. All the best plugins are iLok. Not a huge fan of the concept, but I'll continue to use it for now.SamDi wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 4:31 pmNo I did not hear before of it to be honest. You don't think 10 is enough? Well imo it would be better than contacting the vendor 10 times!SamDi wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 4:31 pmNo I did not hear before of it to be honest. I plainly refuse to pay more than 10€ for anything that can't be authorized offline and that contains an actual installer and not a download center.DevonB wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 10:13 pm Back around 2004 I think I had BSOD's with iLok software version. I save all installers and authorization keys, so if a company goes bankrupt I still have a chance to run the software I own as long as Windows doesn't break back compatibility, which they don't use to.
I too refuse to pay from my own pocket for piracy protection for a third party.
I don't agree that all the best plugins are iLok, but it might be confirmation bias from my side because for me plugins/companies using iLok, download centers or subscription models don't exist, I never look at them or install demos.
The only thing that could break this position for me is me installing a DAW-exclusive virtual machine with PCI passthrough for my soundcard, so I know that what I install and license there is at least set in stone there even if the company vanishes (as long as I can keep backups of the VM). Then upgrading Windows versions could be done risk free as long as I did it on a copy of the Virtual machine.
The problem is that the older I get the less I like to tweak.

I had a problem with my licences when I had to format my HD.I told that to one of the developers, and he was able to reset all my iLok licences, even from the other developers.SamDi wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 4:31 pmNo I did not hear before of it to be honest. So within one email, you're good to re-authorize your iLok plugins.
