I'm still hooked on The Drop.

Post

Let’s be honest (and I’m not disrespecting any product/opinion/choice - everything is valuable and usable in the right hands).

But... if anyone thinks that any of the mentioned plugins (or not yet mentioned but currently available on the market) can be even mentioned on the same page with The Drop in terms of analog modelling accuracy, then they simply never touched real analog.

Post

While the Drop must be great without a doubt, i hardly can see the point of the post above (i don't mean this in a disrespectful way), because :
1- the original poster did not ask for "accurate analog modelling" (so any filter plugin with a good featureset and/or a nice workflow, and a nice sound -be it analog modelled or not- could be a worthwhile suggestion);
2- I don't get that part "then they simply never touched real analog." : my opinion would be that "if someone think that there is one single so-called analog sound, then they simply never touched real analog" :) There is very little in common with the CS15 filter, the MS20 filter, a Polysix filter, a Polivoks filter. All of them are analog, none of them sound the same.
For instance, if I had to choose a filter with a nice & complex architecture, i might go for Arturia's emulation of the X-pander, because the architecture is quite unique and allows for nice sonic explorations. Knowing if their emulation is close to the original would be quite secondary, given all the things you can do with it.

Well, to each his own

OP asked if people are still in love with The Drop. The Drop is an analog modelled resonant filter. Therefore it is only comparable with analog modelled resonant filters/plugins and that's what I referred to.

An EQ is a filter as well, analog modelled or not. It all depends what you use it for.

I did not mention one single analog sound. That statement was based upon testing half of The Drop filter models to the original synth filters they were modelled on... and that nothing else atm gets so close.

But here ya go I get what you are saying let me correct my first response. To the OP: my take, if you want analog modelled filter I say The Drop, if you want any other filter for whatever modulation, FX, architecture feature then doesn't matter. Whichever looks good on your screen and is fun to use it's all relative (if it's not about the sound). LFO Tool is a great utility filter with flexible routing modulation and is zero latency.

Yes, I see you point now (i may have read the thread a bit too quickly and missed the point, sorry for the confusion)

OP, in case you already own Zebra don't overlook Zebrify (particularly with XMF)....

Or grab the free Voltage Modular and then some of the pay for filters which are dirt cheap and build your dream filter with whatever saturation, modulation and FM features you want. Alot more fun than most filters available, except for The Drop, which can accept audio rate modulation via side chain, so load it up In Voltage Modular and go nuts.

What about FilterShaper Core 2 by Cableguys? It has cool filters, even ZDF ones, and they can be used without envelopes as well... curious to know if somebody made comparisons to other more celebrated filters plugins.

Also, it is 50% off until Dec, 7th...

I’m really hoping that Filters of Mass Destruction (or whatever the project may be called these days) eventually gets released.
I think the Flower Child filter that was already released is one of the coolest quirky filters out there.
Not very versatile but super fun and unique.

Hey thanks for all the answers. I think UVI shade is the one I will go for if its on sale again. For some reason I didn't look at it earlier. I just like the UI design much better than anything that looks like a knobby jungle.

I hear that The Drop has the best modelled filters but I wasn't specifically looking for "the best" filters, it was more: I did an a/b filtersweeping Goodhertz LoHi and some EQs and also Filtershaper and LoHi just sounded much better with higher resonance. That said I think for a comprehensive filtering tool, I think I like UVIs design and modulation options much better (also their UI scales beautifully) and I'm not after any authentic modelling (as long as it does sound more smoothly resonant than harsh).

About Shaperbox: I have it but I'm gonna sell mine once their sale is over, I think its fun but it doesn't work very well with how I use filters. I usually just want to build one type of sweep that I automate over longer stretches of the song.

It would be nice to see Audiority contribute with their own multi-filter plugin. Luca must have quite a few filter models lying around at present. I'd love some rough and ready filters designed for tone rather than range or accuracy.

Taste also plays a role: Some might not like the sound of analogue filters as much; favouring something more obviously digital because of its own qualities.

Of course, if one is not familiar with the need for gain staging, then an analogue modelled filter can be made to sound weak. Though by the same token: saturation/distortion is one of the reasons I love The Drop. It's a really nice tone box without even looking at the modulation options.

Actually, I never even touched the modulation in The Drop for several months as I was using it as a mixing tool rather than an obvious effect. But it can certainly do effects: For which, I would recommend increasing the internal sample rate as far as possible when using the modulation options as it impacts significantly on the tone of the resonance.

Definitely not aiming to put you off your choice - I think that some of those filters can live happily beside The Drop in a mix. As we're talking about resonance, I wanted to add that the resonance - along with everything else - is done right in The Drop. It can be made to sound like rushing air before it breaks into screaming self oscillation. As I wrote above, to perform a fair test, higher sampling rates are required: The difference when modulated is something that might sound a little broken compared to smoothly flowing liquid.

If you have Reaktor then you have access to not only some very nice ZDFs but also a construction kit that allows for inserting your own distortion - if you want a saturating filter. They could be made to be more reactive with a little TLC - where TLC is an envelope follower in a feedback path: LPFs with simple waveshapers (exponential functions) can be used to create rough envelope followers if you want to explore this avenue.

To be honest, I have some models lying around that I used in several products. The idea of a creative filter is something I want to do next year and, as usual with our products, there will be a lot of color and character :)

In the first page of this thread, I noticed other users asking for alternative wow/flutter options. Give Tube Modulator a try ;)

Cheers,
Luca

Cytomic The Drop. Nothing else ITB holds a candle to it, analog emulation perfection.
