If you haven't demoed The Drop and really put it through its paces you'll kick yourself one day.
Don't be fooled by the fact its circuit modelled, this thing can get nasty and produce really complex and organic textures.

Not many filters sound good when modulated at audio frequencies, which most noobs don't take into consideration.
Most VST filters mentioned here can't even accommodate audio rate mod.

It would be nice to see Audiority contribute with their own multi-filter plugin. Luca must have quite a few filter models lying around at present. I'd love some rough and ready filters designed for tone rather than range or accuracy.

To be honest, I have some models lying around that I used in several products. The idea of a creative filter is something I want to do next year and, as usual with our products, there will be a lot of color and character

You definitely understand tone and musical distortion. Whatever you have in mind, I am sure it will complement The Drop rather than try and compete with it - though it would be interesting to hear your take on some of those filters as well.

Just wondering - have you tried UVI Shade? Cause the filters seem to be really good from what I can tell. Maybe not analog sounding like the Drop, but the LFO rate does go up to 300hz with a multiplier of up to 16. And I think they sound very good on almost any setting, even with the resonance cranked up all the way. The filters are the same as in Falcon I believe. I feel like it's a plugin that can be pushed really to the extreme and still deliver musical results.

So the drop is still the standard for analog filter plugins? I tried it, it's great for fast modulation but I find it rather clean. And I'm not super convinced by the saturation sound when driven hard. UVI is out of the game because of ilok.

I want to avoid aturia when possible (I don't like their Arturia Software Center), but they would be my last resort when there isn't something else.

Any other recommendation for a very nice sounding character filter like some EMU filters or very creamy and colored analog emulations? I want to control it mainly manually, so I don't care for crazy modulation things (a simple lfo or so is not bad to have of course).

Audio Damage plugins feature some nice characterful filters (even some cheap digital-on-purpose ones which have plenty character).

Goodhertz LoHi checks all these boxes (minus the LFO)...Also, while The Drop sounds fantastic (I own it), I find myself using PSP Stompfilter and Soundtoys FilterFreak just as often for their unique capabilities...FilterFreak is the only ITB filter whose envelope response matches the feel of my favorite guitar stompbox filters, nothing else comes close...but both of those use (soft) iLok.

Crank up the level input on the drop to make it sound brutal.
Emu filters ( assuming you mean the emulator ) are anything but analogue sounding.
Imho the drop is still the one to beat , every interesting filter is in there .
Now if u-he would make a zebrify version of zebra-HZ .. that would be totally awesome

Try Native Instruments Driver then - also included inside Reaktor 6 (among other great ones like the Monark filter and others) and now also inside Guitar Rig 6.
I really like The Drop, but when i want filthier sounding (in a good way) filters, i reach for the NI stuff.
