Imho there is nothing wrong with adding a few features not found on the hard ware , as long as the user can turn these off.
Tal bassline has osc—>filter fm not found on the og 101 etc .
Either way ,m.
I hope Tal now gets a bit more exposure and people finally realise the quality it represents .

Strangely, I like most of the very vintage analog sounds without velocity. As long as the sound itself has a certain appealing analog mojo/quality, then I'm good to play and enjoy it.

I was trying to make a dark synthwave track with these presets, but ended up with a cheesy Todd Terje-disco-like lounge number instead.

After spending some time with J-8, I'm noticing a certain tone characteristic to it, which can be described as 'pillowy lushness'.

For those who always like to say, if you aren't making your own presets you are a wuss.
I present exhibit A above.
I have had the synth for weeks longer than EH. I have made some patches in that time.
None of them are of the quality of EH.

I stick to my lane..... He makes them, I play them.

Yet one of the things I love the most about your sound design is how expressive they usually are... (yes which includes velocity, modwheel, aftertouch etc).

Links? I’m following the thread on GS and do not recall any mention of low end.

It seems that some people prefer the Arturia (both on Gearslutz and on Youtube). Apart from the different features, some hear more low-end with the Arturia.
Anyway, I think Roland Cloud/System 8 is no longer without a competitor. Arturia and TAL are in the game now ;)

Has anyone seen a test where the TAL J-8 is compared to the hardware?

I didn't either. Maybe that is from a youtube comment or two.

Thanks. :)
When making commercial presets, all expression controllers have to be included and done right (and with MPE this is a whole different world of stuff to think about). But, for my own use, I will often make sounds that omit certain controllers, although this is mostly with vintage sounds. For example, I have a bunch of Korg mini700 emulated-presets and these are without velocity in order to preserve the charm belonging to the original hardware.

At the very least, between the J-8 and the Arturia Jup-8-V4 (I had pretty much written off Arturia for quite some time, now reconsidering with this update) I am no longer thinking about a Jupiter Xm. If B is actually thinking of a hardware clone, I imagine it will still be awhile before it sees the light of day...

Post

In the only TAL J-8 vs Arturia Jup8V video on YouTube, I did not find any mention that the low end is better on the Jup8V - con the contrary, low end on the Arturia was criticized - notably in ONE comment.

Not a fan of the prominent horizontal light lines across the GUI, it really screws with my eyes, and makes an already busy GUI even more busy and thus cluttered. The lines are less of an issue on a real hardware synth in the real world because of the way light is bounced / reflected, shadows fall at the angle you view it from. But it's a different story when it comes to how it's viewed on a computer screen and that of which is typically viewed on a much smaller scale than the hardware equivalent. Does it have any flexibility in how the GUI can be changed ?
