The Honest Truth about Audio Plugins

An opinion piece. He says plugins are convenient, but are far too much of a compromise compared to real hardware. And plugins companies will continue making you purchase new spruced up HD versions of existing plugins that you already own. Much like TV manufactures are trying to get us all to buy 4K and then 8K TVs. There's a conspiracy between hardware manufacturers, famous audio engineers and plugin companies - who all reap the benefits of us wasting money on plugins.

He's fundamentally arguing against digital anything. Converters do the oversampling and filtering, it's been 8x/384 kHz since the Lexicon days up to the Bricasti M7. Older digital hardware employed analog linear-phase anti-aliasing filters. Many studios have a real plate and spring at least. I'd love to see an analog pitch shifter... imagining something using tape or an oilcan. Just goes to show analog has problems emulating digital.
BBDs can't be used, they sample values at a regular interval, thus they are subject to Nyquist-Shannon and must be lowpassed. So back to tape delay, chorus, and literal flange.
The conspiracy charges are a bit much, especially in the age of mass misinformation. The SOS article in question is from 2000 and SOS is slowly bringing all past articles to its new website format: https://www.soundonsound.com/more-sos-p ... les-coming. In fact, they link you to the Wayback Machine archives: https://web.archive.org/web/20150607012 ... /waves.asp Nothing to do with lizard people.

Basically it's about a channel with 280 subscriptions trying to get more views. But I assume that won't bother the OP.

hardware is superior as it's not part of a global conspiracy to control the masses

There are MANY CDs being produced using plugins that make it to radio.v1o wrote: Thu Dec 24, 2020 4:14 am An opinion piece. He says plugins are convenient, but are far too much of a compromise compared to real hardware.
Production techniques are always very important.
These days plugins can get close to hardware without the negative characteristics of hardware.
Its best to use both.
