Missed this initially and I disagree, or should I say not necessarily. There are so many exceptions to that "rule" and to so many degrees that it's more myth than rule at all. Do yourself a huge favor and don't get wrapped up in it. Even inexpensive gear has gotten really good in many cases now.
Daimonicon wrote: Sun Aug 23, 2020 11:01 am There's no such thing as cheapest best headphone. All cheaper headphones will color the sound and will not work good enough for mixing. Save money and find used headphone on the second hand market eventually.
All headphones color the sound at least a little (and as has been pointed out, it's no big deal) and many inexpensive headphones will work just fine for mixing. But if someone wants to buy second-hand headphones which they can't be sure what condition they're reallyin, how hard they've been used, and were used by people of unknown hygiene, to each their own; I'll pass!

There's no better than these:

A little fragile though, treat them with care. Other sennheiser products pale in comparison due to the fact that these are not any given style or effect; but a good test of function and frequency response.

Though there is other good headphones, it's often hard to discern overall how things will sound to conventional speakers in contrast. If you're really serious, the best conventional speakers I've used for testing is from a sony bravia tv:

And for a further test I rely on two creative speakers side by side, so as to hear them in unison. it's a good test of mids and an approximate realization of punch which would affect phones and devices.

I wouldn't trust ear buds for mixing YMMV

yeah earbuds are way too close the the eardrum really imo. fine for self monitoring in performing... but i would refrain from trying to mix anything substantial with them. i wouldn't trust them. cheers

Audio Technica ATH-M50x is the industry standard for an affordable pair of headphones for tracking/mixing.

I have no idea why these get recommended so much for producers, I sold mine as they are not flat therefore no good for mixing.....wish I got the ATH-M40x instead as I hear they are much flatter and cheaper too.

Anything flat that doesn't hype the bass for top end.
Radio shack used to have some for $20 that worked.

Always do comparisons with a mix between a number of different speakers, headphones, etc.
Then you will get to know the frequency response and how it reproduces.

Or Oratory's eq usually works most of the time better than sonarworks + it's free!

Just because it's the highest ranked doesn't mean it sounds the best though.

AKG K371 is pretty cheap (you can find for about $80 or less) and the EQ does work great!
I actually preferred them to mixing more than the Sundara 2020 version oddly enough!

Beyerdynamic DT240 for maybe cheaper are okay. I preferred them to MDR7506.

Otherwise HD600 or 6xx. Can't go bad.

Audio Science review has good reviews and RTings too. You can pick up a cheap headphone amp for $100-160 that's literally state of the art. I will admit Electrostatic headphones are worth it though L300 I found to be the best cost effective mixing headphone I've used. Yes $650ish for it/ESL amp but it's worth it if you do mix. I trusted them more than any speaker I've used oddly enough even for mixing!

*the good old days of having jobs and money for headphones! :p

Sonarworks DOES sound worse initially because you are used to the headphones the way they originally sound.
I hated it when I first tried it on my DT770's but the mixes I do with Sonarworks turned on are far, far better than anything I did before in terms of sound quality.
I also have a pair of Hyper X Cloud II's that I use for comms and gaming. Sonarworks is good enough that it actually turns those into something I can mix with too.

Recommended for me.

This is a weird list, even though it's measured "scientifically". Stating that Beats headphones are flatter than most Beyerdynamics and AKGs feels... welll... weird....

Indeed. I looked at it and laughed to be quite honest

No, it's because the highs aren't too sharp for the most part. In the case of conventional speakers you need the highs to be higher so as to be audible. It comes down to suitable frequency response whether or not that was their aim it's the truth.

And now you're in the know, all other headphones I've seen listed I've had headphones the like. They were all trash. All of them has highs too high and they differ from a conventional speaker or mono device.

Who's kidding, a real joke when you waste money. I doubt I'd laugh, but maybe if you didn't take advice knowingly lol. Then I'd be the one kidding.

Superlux 662F and/or Superlux 681F - the second one needs passive filter because trebles are too annoying. The filter is described here: https://rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread ... lTo=147485
Those headphones are crazily good for the price
