I've been trying to up my mixing game; bought a few plugins to help with width and spatial.
I'm not in a treated room sadly, so there may be some frequency inaccuracies, but I think my mixing/mastering has improved.
Got the vocal of Splice, built a Deep House track around it.
Feedback welcome, especially on mix, arrangement etc.

It sounds very professional. It is not breaking any new ground but that was not your intention.
I think the female vocal could use some de-essing. The fade in at the start was slightly strange.
The mix was a bit loud. Soundcloud doesn't have a loudness penalty yet but I think it might be turned down a little on other platforms.

for the female vocal chorus, you were right in your approach to remove most of the punch with stereo, yet with mid side you could use side to bring out some of the punches power to emulate some of the more expensive post processing performed by elite studios. If you omit the mid nearly entirely you'd get away with it, and people would not be forced to raise the volume to hear the vocals.
The vocals that are at the forefront are really quite good, aside from more delay than I'd use; they sound good, but the delay's nice admittedly.

thanks Frantz. it was pretty much an exercise to see if I could mix/master to a commercial level. I got a few plugins that helped me. The song itself is somewhat vanilla, just three chords repeated.Frantz wrote: Fri Dec 25, 2020 12:21 am It sounds very professional. It is not breaking any new ground but that was not your intention.

PRODUCTION:
Really shiny, glossy sounding mix...yet it's warm as well.
Nice! VERY pleasant to listen to!
I'm gonna pick on things I think don't work as well...just opinion...others will probably disagree...
Overall there is too much high frequency content for me (with a big extra lift for some reason just after 50 secs)?
Sounds like there is just a little bit too much energy above 5kHz? (This can be quite tiring after a while on the ear...whole album for example)
The L to R spatial aspects are controlled, open and full of life...lead vocal is maybe panned a bit too much for most modern producers with more presence need in the centre? (You may have overdone the wideness a tiny bit...but everyone does at some point!:)
Back to front of the sound stage is slightly too flat for me with too much reverb washed over too many parts - especially the lead vocal.
MUSIC:
Love the rippling synth lines - nicely timed and judged...all your accompaniment is really very effective!
Shame the vocals off Splice aren't that great...bit 'thin' in places and 'essy' (down to the original recording) and with significant intonation issues on so many notes...yeah, I know I'm sensitive to this issue with perfect pitch etc, but they would never get through vetting in a professional studio without some melodyne work!

@Karma_tba - thanks for leaving a comment. Have a happy holiday time yourself bro.
@Chamaleon - thanks for the extensive feedback, and the other help too. Part of the reason I post here is to get feedback so I can make improvements.
The vocal could be more centered. The vocal I used actually came processed with reverb and delay already painted in there.

I think it's a good song overall, but I feel like it's lacking punch and some dynamics in the kick and bass. I'm not a pro at this, but from hearing other electronic music, I feel as if there's usually some thick punchy sound throughout the track that's lacking on this track. The lead sound is pretty good and has dynamics.
Also, around, 1:47, the vocals sound a bit out of tune when she says "paradise".

Thanks for your comment and feedback @3ptguitarist. Looks like I'll have to check my vocals in the future even if they are from Splice!3ptguitarist wrote: Wed Dec 30, 2020 1:55 am I think it's a good song overall, but I feel like it's lacking punch and some dynamics in the kick and bass. The driving bass/drum is important. However, in this mix I wanted it to be more mellow Deep House style.

I have a lot of music to catch up on.
I agree with Frantz. This is really loud. I had to turn it down a ton. Other than that, I don't have a problem with the vocals or anything. But then I use Vocaloid so don't go by me. IMO, this sounds excellent except for the loudness thing.

Thanks, I matched the volume to my reference track. I thought Soundcloud would turn it down. Apparently it didn't...wagtunes wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 2:05 am I have a lot of music to catch up on.

I like her voice too. I searched on Splice for a long time before settling on that vocal.
