Want to make music again. What (mac) host should I go for these days?

Hi!

I haven't made music in maybe 15 years. I used to be a heavy Cubase, EnergyXT and Zynewave Podium user, but on Windows back then. Today I'm using a mac. Looking at the options today confuses me :D Is there anything I should take an extra look at?

What's wrong with the Mac you're using now?

I mean what VST Host / Sequencer / DAW software should I go for? My Mac is brand new so that one's staying :)

Garageband or Logic, dunno, you will feel right at home if you are comfortable with Cubase.

I was, back then, though I remember being hindered by the lack of modularity... Studio One looks interesting.

I remember Logic being quite hard to learn, but that was 15 years ago :)

Checkout Bitwig than, it's relatively new player on the market, but it's so on point and fun, modularity is his forte. :tu:

Your fellow Swede :)

Yeah, Studio One is awesome indeed, but it's not getting along with macOS unfortunately. :?

How is it not getting along with macOS? Will have a look at Bitwig!

The general scuttlebutt is that Studio One is not as solid and efficient on the Mac.

I use Bitwig and Logic.

Logic is a no brainer purchase. It is the best DAW value one can find. An amazing amount of quality devices, both synths and FX. Logic is feature packed and year after year it receives impressive updates for free. You can easily use nothing but Logic to produce great quality music.

Bitwig is a fun and fresh modular DAW.

You’re going to see every Mac-compatible DAW recommended to you in this thread, so here’s my advice, from someone who was previously a PC user, then used both for 10 years, now uses just Mac. I would start with what you already have and/or know.

You have GarageBand already and it’s essentially “Logic Lite”, so give that a try and if you want/need more, go with Logic. Depending on your needs, GarageBand may be plenty for you. If not, Logic is arguably the best bang-for-buck in the DAW arena.

If you still have a valid Cubase license, then demo the latest version of Cubase and, if you prefer that over GB/Logic, then upgrade to the newest version. Again, consider all the options. The lite versions of Cubase are pretty packed with features and may be a big improvement over your current version, so check the comparison guides.

If one of those options don’t work for you, then consider every other DAW the sun. My 2 cents.
Logic Pro | LUNA Pro | OB-X8 | Prophet 6 | OB-6 | Rev2 | TEO-5 | Pro 3 | SE-1X | Minitaur | Deepmind 12D | Slim Phatty | TR-1000 | Analog RYTM mk2 | Digitakt 2 | TD-3 MO | TD-3 | Maschine+

I would set my weights https://www.admiralbumblebee.com/DAW-Chart.html and skip Reaper in the first round :D

...except if u like it at first sight

but because you used Cubase before I would start with the trial of that one, https://new.steinberg.net/cubase/trial/
before anything else

All DAWs except Cakewalk and Samplitude/Sequoia. FL already has an OSX version, right?

I haven't used Cubase since SX2, and haven't kept a license (or anything else). I can probably dig up some old VST licenses in my email archives ;). I think I'll start with testing s1 and logic. Thanks for all the excellent tips!
