fmr's got one: maybe he'd be willing to post a dry saw saw wave playing a few sustained notes, a low note, a mid note, and a very high note dry. Then do the same thing with each of the 3 chorus modes. Then we could compare at home using TAL Chorus, OSL, Arturia...I've even got some Syntorus 2 presets I feel get pretty close to the Juno sound.

@chk71 I have no idea either. Anyway TALs version just sounds very 'Juno' to me. Not that i have ever played an actual Juno but still. Also i hate these Plugin Manager thingies. Too much and it often it doesnt work, but that could just be on my end.

I'd really be interested in hearing a very high note because that Arturia emulation definitely does something weird with very high notes. So I'd love to hear the highest note a Juno-60 could produce with a Saw Waveform.

Hi Guys:

My Juno-60 is currently being serviced (some faders needed to be lubricated). I hope to have it again in the studio in the beginning of 2021. I will be glad to post those sounds as soon as I get it back.

Beware though that the chorus in my Juno-60 is REALLY noisy. Don't know how much of this noise is due to the age of the synth, and how much of it is original (the original was already quite noisy).

Someone pointed out some 'what sounds like aliasing' on the Arturia version, which when I tried here, I was able to confirm. If you play some high notes, you're going to hear some extra "radio tuning in" oscillating type noises in the Arturia that you don't here in the TAL version, Roland Cloud, OSL Chorus, or when I setup Syntorus 2 to get into Juno territory. So there's at least one thing I'm thinking isn't quite right about the Arturia version. Unless the hardware does it too and it's not aliasing but some weird kind of IMD thing that only Arturia captured.

So even if the Arturia nailed the "I+II" mode uses the same phase for the chorus so it's mono, and it's much, much faster than I or II...it doesn't necessarily mean it's an exacting emulation everywhere. Hence why I'd love to hear fmr's unit play some really really high notes in comparison with the Arturia. And just generally listen to how they compare. Arturia didn't capture the wooshing stereo noise of the hardware that you hear in the Roland Cloud version. But they did include the noise in the Juno instrument plugin, which makes it odd that it was left out of the standalone chorus.

If I only knew Juno's were going to be selling for almost 2 grand, I'd have bought them back in the late 90's early 2000's when they could be had for $300-400 and were easy to find at those prices.

Being that the Juno chorus is based on a pair of BBDs, one for each side (rather paltry 256-stage ones at that, namely Panasonic MN3009's), it'd be inconceivable for the hardware not to alias. Looks like there's some input filtering (not that I'm much for deciphering schematics), but even so, BBDs are aliasing machines just by nature.

Why it just so happens I have a vintage analog BBD chorus patched in so I gave this a quick test using a hardware chorus with the output from my System-8 running the Juno-106 model with all on board FX off.

Signal chain is:

System-8
Samson Patchbay
Radial EXT-C (to step down from line level to guitar level)
DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus pedal
Strymon Timeline (bypassed - just didn't feel like unplugging things in the pedal board)
Eventide Space (bypassed but used to get back to line level)
RME Fireface 800 line inputs 9+10 (running unbalanced cables back in)

Order of the test is:

1. Dry System-8 hardware - Juno-106 plug-out saw wave (env and keytrack fully open)
2. DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus (hardware)
3. Fuse FX65 Stereo Chorus
4. Arturia Jun-6 Chorus
5. TAL Chorus
6. OSL Chorus
7. Syntorus 2

Warning: this is an unpleasant test. Levels area bit low, frequencies are very high. I made no effort to match the things up. That's not what I'm testing for. I'm testing for aliasing or other weird high end sh*t in a vintage analog BBD chorus compared to plugin BBD chorus emulations to see which, if any, produce crazy aliasing.

Conclusions:

1. The DOD hardware doesn't alias badly. Certainly not an "aliasing machine." There's filtering, there's noise, there's some distortion that maybe is aliasing or IMD or THD, but it's clearly one of the better units in this test.

2. The Fuse is noisier/dirtier, don't hear aliasing. One day I'll try to A/B it with the hardware pedal to try to make them match, but that's a whole other test and not the point of today.

3. The Arturia sounds like a shortwave radio is being tuned in. WTF? This is not good and what was previously repoted. It falls apart on high frequency content.

5. The TAL sounds very filtered. No aliasing.

6. This one sounds very bad with very high frequency content too. Different than the Arturia, but just as bad if not worse. And if I pushed the LFO speed or depth it got worse. Disappointed with this one.

7. Syntorus really surprised me by being the best of the bunch in this test. I really enjoy it so maybe I shouldn't be surprised but I bet with some effort, I could dial it in really well.

Yeah BBD chips are a primitive form of early digital chip. There's a BBD delay chip inside the Korg Minilogue, its more gritty and lofi than even freebie plugin delays.

BBD based chorus pedals pretty much all sound different, even when they use the exact same chip, because of differences in how the circuitry around the chips is implemented. The DOD chorus units are super clean I'm sure there is heavy band limiting and filtering. I have a DOD FX67 somewhere myself.
