Welcome to the One Synth Challenge #143! It's a friendly music competition where you can win cool prizes but most importantly, meet amazing musicians, and learn a lot about mixing, sound design, and more! :)

Special Rules used this month:
  • Synth: Choose a hardware synth, or software emulation (Examples of software: Diva, U-NO-LX, The Legend, OB-X, MonoFury, Ensoniq SQ80). As usual, choose ONE synthesizer this month, and only use that, multiple instances / bounced / frozen tracks are allowed.
  • Romplers / Samplers are not allowed. If your synthesizer is built into a Workstation, you may use that part. Most common accepted types of synthesis include FM, Additive, Wavetable, Subtractive / 'Virtual Analog', Granular, Modular.
  • Effects: You may use any hardware effects unit as long as it follows the usual effect rules. Commercial software effects may only be used if they emulate a hardware. Any free / built in DAW effect may be used freely as usual. All normal effects for rules still apply - aka with modulation/distortion.
  • General: In your submission, please tell us the model, brand and year of the Hardware synth / effects used. If using a Hardware emulation synth / effects, tell us the name, and if possible, what it emulates.
  • If you chose an emulation, it must be an actual hardware emulation of some kind, as specified by the developer, or product page. If it's not obvious, please show proof, or contact us to ask.

Love the theme this month. If I choose to participate i think I'll use the new Arturia Juno 6 emulation.

It's Reason's Subtractor allowed ?
I think it's a vintage piece of software itself

12 years old PC running :Reaper;Reason;Dune;Zampler;Kontakr;Reaktor;and many others countless vst :D

A little clarification... for drums, can we bounce down individual hits and arrange them on the arrange view/time-line? This is essentially creating a drum kit from samples of the hardware. Can we bounce down multiple hits to layer for a single sound? So many questions. I love the hardware idea, it's the opposite of what we've been doing for years!

Post

I'll probably get roasted for this, but what if the people going with software had to use only one instance and bounce tracks from that? It would be more like dealing with....well, hardware :D
Just a touch of EQ and a tickle of compression

Post

What about Hardware and software together?

Nord Modular

Post

That a very unusual start of a new year, great twist on the rules :)
How would the rules apply to VCV rack? Only use modules based on real ones? Can we only use 1 kind of module?

Post

Quick Check:
I think I’m going to use Ableton’s Operator. It's enough of DX7 emulation that I believe it falls within the bounds of the rules.

I was going to ask the same about voltage modular although I don't have a clue about which ones are based on real ones.

I love the idea here!
I don't have much in the way of proper synth hardware but I do have a few physical noisemakers I could work with.

now for my rules question: am I allowed to choose and use a device that I have created for this challenge? I've rigged up an oscillator setup on one of my microcontrollers and I'm always looking for excuses to develop it into a full synth.
It would be 100% hardware, digital oscillation through analog filters recorded into my DAW.

Brave man!
Will that give you enough sonic range to create a whole track?

Yes, if I'm clever enough with my composition. People have done more with less.

I'm a little confused: is Diva really a hardware emulation? I don't think it is and it would seem to open the door to almost any synth if it were allowed.

@jasinski I also don't believe Operator is a DX7 clone at all - it has a ton more functionality like waveforms beyond sinewaves, filters. And what about software that was based on hardware but then enhanced considerably?

This is a pretty great idea, but seems like it may be riddled with questions and challenges especially with the requirement to sample at least phrases...

It should not be, as it is not an emulation of an existing piece of hardware, if I understand the purpose of the challenge...
