No New Purchases Until BF 2021

Upon realizing I possess an arsenal of virtual gear that puts 1960s Abbey Road Studios to shame, and that I have enough stuff to make a hundred albums without needing anything new, I have decided not to buy anything for music making until black Friday 2021. Eleven whole months! Can I do it?

Day one is rough so far. I want to buy all the things!

Two exceptions I have decided on are if Spectrasonics has a successor to RMX this year or if Man Makes Noise releases any new presets for Omnisphere. As the year progresses I'll make a list of anything that gives me GAS and count the hours until black Friday.

Thanks, brother. I do let GAS substitute for progress when progress feels difficult to make. It's part of what informed my decision.

Please allow me to dissuade you:

• This is a gear-based hobby. You can never have too much gear, virtual or otherwise.

• Even if all that gear doesn't inspire all the time, it probably entertains. I just bough Syntronik. Did I need it? Not one bit. But I've already blown through 3 hours happily playing with the sounds, with many more yet to come.

• Plugin developers need to make a living too! Don't hold back on them.

• What will you possibly have to write about here on KVR if you don't have new plugins until next BF?

• Don't make commitments you can't keep. Try something easier than denying GAS, like running a marathon or inventing faster than light travel

Or a compromise: sell stuff to buy more stuff. Like recycling or some metaphor for easing the GAS by making more room or summat

It helps to be one of the poorer people, so I don't have 999 of the shiny-newest synthesizers and effects and don't need to make endless discussions whether Pigment sounds better than Serum or Dune or Falcon or Rapid or whether U-He bundle is all you need...

But of course, if there are some special offers, I'll still buy plugins!

I'm with you on this. I have everything I need to make music but I keep buying stuff. I think everyone gets into the trap of continuously buying things in the belief it will make their music better. In 2021 my only purchases will be updates/upgrades when they come up on sale. I will not buy any new DAWs. And if I buy a new plugin I will have to sell another plugin.
