I don't own any hardware synth, so I'm considering using the free OB-Xd.
It's an OB-X emulation but with a bunch of improvements .. velocity sens., multimode filter, 4-pole filter, .. some of which can be found on other Oberheims afaik.
I guess that's still okay?

why not?

The Nord Micro Modular is a DSP software on dedicated hardware, and not an emulation of any other hardware. Therefore I wasn't sure that it could fit the "rules".

What's the difference of a digital synth or a "DSP software on dedicated hardware"?

I don't think I can make anything I'd be proud of with my Roland D-110 if I can't use its drums. I suppose I could use a software emulation, but I just don't feel it would be right honestly.
It's very tasty, I swear!

Its very possible to creat music without drums. Get out of your comfort zone...
Any submission without drums usually gets an extra point!
Its called challenge, thats why I don‘t really understand why some want to choose a questionable candidate as synth just to redo what they always do.
We do have enough choices free or commercial...
I reflect about repairing my crackle box...; - )

Some years ago I had the chance to make a demo song for the TAL U-No-X, based on presets by the sound designer Luftrum.

https://soundcloud.com/photonic-1/luftrum12-demo

Since then, I didn´t use this synth again. Now I take the opportunity to use this synth for this month. It is an emulation of the Roland Juno 60. The sound is very close to the original. The main differences are velocity and up to 12 voices polyphony. It is not a very versatile synth, but has a very good sound. And I like the idea to be limited by the synth and not by my creativty :D

In addition to that I will use Outer Space, a clone of the Roland Space Echo RE 201 tape delay. And for reverb I will use the REV250 by Snkote, a clone of the first digital reverb EMT250.
Let`s see if I can find another hardware clone toy in my VST-basement to use this month!

Would I be able to use ni Fm8 as this was inspired by the Dx9?

Or Rob Papens Bit.. it is emulated o the Jupiter 8

@FrankH ... the "drums" on the PT-10 (and others like it) I'm sure were used on one of the synth pop tracks in the charts man many moons ago. Of course David Bowie used the style-o-phone!

The nice thing about my PT-10 was that it was given to my daughter by my parents, and she learned to play the Demo song (at about age 5), and has gone on to become a professional musician, a great pianist as well as flute/saxes/clarinets/strings/voice! Suffering in these Covid times like many musicians. I like to think this little keyboard sparked her interest and path into music.

'inspired by' and actually emulating are two very different things, IMO. B.I.T. obviously is not an emulation of a Jupiter 8. If that goes, anything analogue-ish goes. I think Z' got it right ( :tu: ) when saying:
z.prime wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 6:25 am What if we clarified the rules with something like: the chosen synth must state on the website that it is a software version / implementation / recreation of a specific piece of hardware? Is that more or less what the original intent of the challenge was?
Surely that was the intent. And even then I'd consider it sporting to avoid using drastic enhancements to the original. For example: Arturia's DX7 offers choice of envelopes, including fancy MSEGs, But when aiming for a DX7 emulation one should really only use the DX7-style ones, shouldn't one ?

Still dithering myself. I'm leaning towards the KORG odyssey or MS-20 VST. Those stay very close to their originals and sound excellent. Probably Full Bucket if it had to be freeware. Nice and to the point. Will be dipping a toe in the waters of hardware soon with a Behringer 2600, but alas, that's unlikely to arrive on time

I asked earlier--but no response. Are tape emulations okay? I was thinking maybe not, as they can change the character of the sound from the synth. But if they are, I'm in.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

ok, said that way: it's none.
