Hiya! And welcome! Just to clarify: Synth1 _does_ state it's a Nord Lead 2 clone.

If you're actually using hardware, I think doing anything it's capable of is fair game. But that's my stance, who also votes for allowing commercial plugins every month for the sake of the chewnz :)

Now comes my real question: I own a minilogue XD and would like to use it if I participate. As some of you may know, it has 2 VCO's and a digital oscillator, in which you can load user made oscillators. Should I stick with the factory osc's or would it be allowed to use user oscillators? (Same question applies to the FX section of the XD, as you can load user FX's too). My guess is "stick with factory" but you never know.

Cheers guys :tu:
Welcome EdSfer, I'd say "stick with factory" and get the most from them. Enjoy the challenge!

Where's the referee??? :D

Thanks to both of you liqih and z.prime for your answers.

It seems to me it would be fair indeed to allow use of all the possibilities when using hardware but it's no big deal, I'll stick with factory in the doubt :tu:

I stand corrected then I thought it was more "inspired" by Nordlead than a true emulation.

Convolution is basically a sample and the contest is themed around actual emulations as opposed to samples.

The usual rule with wavetables is to stick to single-cycle wavetables. Factory content and anything you create by hand is generally okay. Just don't use it as a sample playback engine. I assume this translates in a straight-forward manner to these user oscillators.

Actually these are not wavetables AFAIK, more like additional waveforms or algorithms like an FM Osc or a supersaw, a granular osc, these kind of things (no samples). But these are neither factory content, neither made by me, I downloaded them.

I've been playing around with that lately, and it sounds satisfyingly lo-fi... I didn't use it for the last OSC, though. But I was already thinking of using it for the current one.

dB
I have it installed, and have not yet discovered any problems...

I thought, being an emulation, it's a perfect little reverb for this round and I quite like the sound. And it randomizes too, very nice. Multiple instances do no produce the same output from the same input.

Can anyone recommand free emuation VSTS for this contest? I already know of OBXD and Dexed but any other suggestions welcome.
Also can we use presets or do all the sounds have to be made from scratch?

Post

I haven't done a synth challenge in a few years, but this one is interesting. So just 1 question:

I want to use my Alesis Fusion. Am I allowed to use only 1 synthesis type or any that is on the synth?
I read more than post = I listen more than I talk

You are free to do what you want in that regard. You can use factory or third party presets, make heavy modification of presets or new sounds from scratch made by you. :tu:

ok
I mean, that's just my singular opinion. I'm not the arbiter of what is and isn't allowed, so I would ask the person running it if convolution in that style is okay.

RE: convolution reverb... it's been used and allowed, you're fine.

Quite a few links on this page are already dead. But you might find those plugins on mirror sites, such as vst4free. Also archive.org often yields results for retrieving lost pages.

Cherry Audio's MG-1+ (Radioshack Concert Mate MG-1) has been kicked around in this thread (by me), as well as Blamsoft Viking VK-1 (Moog Voyager). Full Bucket has also been mentioned, as he has some simulation of Korg synths
