Techno never died .
EDM is just a bad pastiche of it , a commercialised popcorn version for kids , hence the explosion of influencers and ‘ how do I make this sound ?’ threads !
Yes , it is horrible and the difference is night and day

Where do you draw the line between
I'm genuinely curious, it's not a kind of snarky comment. I recently discovered the so-called "melodic techno" or "neotrance" and I like quite a lot of it (Innellea, Worakls, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, that kind of thing). It is the "real thing" or "bad copy" (and what does it copy then?)
I kinda feel the same about trance, this is what has orginally drawn me into electronic music and synths but I can barely stand the post-2010 version of it.

I had to look up these names , Kollektiv Turmstrasse etc..I don't consider that techno
Didn't even know neo-trance was a thing
, what's next ..post-neo trance ...never been a fan of trance except this one ..belgium
As of late , the only new artist I am impressed with is Objekt ,
and of course the good old stuff
Juan atkins , model 500 , lfo ,Drexciya , gerald donald (dopplereffekt , arpanet ,der zyklus ) , propre techno
EDM is to horrible to post .. it's the mc-donalds of electronic music .

I didn't know D&B was 90s music. As I said, I was not a raver in the 90s. I started getting into various newer artist that are in the D&B genre and really like it. I am pretty sure I don't recall anyone sounding like that in the 90s. People like Droeloe or Porter Robinson e.t.c. It's new to my ears. That other stuff posted above just sounds old -- like Oasis or Smashmouth records. Those records had their heyday but are long past.Double Tap wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 7:46 am Yes, it's amazing people are still playing jazz, too.
By the way, drum n bass IS 90s music![]()
But I guess I have no idea what happened to guitar music after Sub Pop, so you know - swings and roundabouts.

Zawinul died quite some time ago
But anything after 1996 isn't music and now off my lawn!

Dopllereffekt , der zyklus , arpanet, xor-gate (all pseudonyms gerald donald ) is far from passe , sure it's not the most easy to get into kind of stuff , but amazing nonetheless .
Not all music has the sole intention to make you body move .some even might call it booring
Gerald Donald and Richard d james , two absolute geniusses

No, sure, that's why I mentioned Sub Pop since I stopped paying attention to guitars around the time I started getting into dance music. Nobody knows everything.telecode wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 11:34 amI didn't know D&B was 90s music. As I said, I was not a raver in the 90s. This is from 1994 and is still a stone cold classic of the genre
and this too, although some would argue it's hardcore rather than dnb, but screw genre policing.
Also check out Renegade Snares by Omni Trio and anything by Dillinja and LTJ Bukem.
But it's quite different to modern stuff.
I hadn't listened to Droeloe but their stuff doesn't seem obviously like dnb to me, but it sounds like interesting electronica - thanks for the tip.

I try to be open minded about music. But sorry, I just can't get into anything that has those drum machines in the songs any more.Double Tap wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 4:27 pmNo, sure, that's why I mentioned Sub Pop since I stopped paying attention to guitars around the time I started getting into dance music. Amen brother.
We used to listen to liquid DnB in the 90's though. More relaxed stuff. I never was a fan of the hectic stuff.
Liquid DnB is the complete crap though these days, for the most part. IMO. I hate that funky "Ahh... so good!" stuff. The LTJ Bukem compilations with all the spacey stuff were much more my thing. Of course those had some Jazz-y stuff as well. Not comparable to the genre nowadays though.
Somehow everything turns to shit at some point.

I used to be into Skinny Puppy when I was young too -- I can't listen to them anymore either. I just don't do nostalgia too well. Something happens to you when you get old. I was young before the internet and mobile phones. We used to do the thing where you try to get a girls phone number on the napkin and the napkin is all drenched in sweat and beer at the end of the night and you can't read the number and you go.. "oh, no!!! fauk!!". I feel I am from a different planet.chk071 wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 6:00 pm Amen brother.

Oh I agree. My musical taste is in a constant progression. Used to listen to Chillout, then beatless Ambient, then Trance, then Breaks, then Chillout again. I still listen to the other genres, but, my favorite thing is changing every few years.
I don't listen to loads of stuff I used to listen to when I was younger anymore though.

Surely, if you search "techno" in YouTube, most likely you get some modern cheesy stuff which has nothing to do with the original vibe of the style. Once you got the right artist in YouTube, the suggestion will be better. Ones you played Object, then it goes to Shifted, Edit Select, Inigo Kennedy, Developer, Artefakt, Subjectedand so

Exact same here.telecode wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 6:26 pm I was young before the internet and mobile phones. But it was DnB and Techno, and numbers written on rave flyers are for hotter girls who are on ecstasy.
KvR does not do well discussing electronic music.
But you play a guitar.telecode wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 5:57 pm I try to be open minded about music. But sorry, I just can't get into anything that has those drum machines in the songs any more.
Like, I guess understand that you are not open minded about music, and are actually just shoving aside a huge vast ocean of it that is at least as varied and dynamic as all those songs you love that were made with the same instrument and the same chords.

Probably more now than ever. And some of the east coast greats are doing west coast tours again. So it appears to be re-emerging and the audience numbers seem to show how much it has been missed. (i.e. Fusion.)
And age groups are from 15-70.
There are new groups too. Some with a more "wall of sound/wrecking crew" traditional approach and others in the World/Jazz/Punk stage.
A common description of fusion is what happens when musicians push the envelope of what's expected. Making new standards as they do.
So I find it surprising when others aren't playing jazz. Hopefully they just haven't been educated to what jazz really is.
