What Filter do you use ?

Hi,

I'm shopping for a filter. I really like the sound of FabFilter Volcano but I'm not sure to like the modulation stuff.

As 130 USD (for Volcano) is quite expensive (to me) for a filter, I would like to know if there is other options I should take a look...

Fabilter plkugins are way overpriced , at least the old stuff
Cytomic the drop is the one to beat , best analogue modelled filter plugin on the market

All the FabFilter stuff gets an updated version eventually. Seeing the modulation stuff they already put e.g. into Saturn2 (which is "only" a saturation plugin), I know they're going to add a bunch of good features into a new Volcano version. Keep in mind too FabFilter becomes cheaper, the more you buy. The entry is always the hardest part But it's overkill if you really only want to filter. Then maybe take a look at their Simplon or Micro.

UVI Shade is new and definitely worth a look. But also focused on modulation and chaining.

FabFilter is great imho but not cheap - I basically agree with gentleclockdivider about FF's pricing.

I bought volcano a few years back but never used it. I dont think it's value for what it is. A filter's a filter, you dont need to spend big $$$ on them. The differences are so minimal, especially tone.
If you already got a stock filter with basic slopes and drive on then that's all you need.
I got the soundtoys filter freak and has modulation capabilities as does volcano but the sound is very similar to my stock ableton, the only major difference is the resonance squeals a bit more and this is supposed to be one of the best on the market. It's basically the same shit. How often will you need to modulate like crazy in volcano or something like that? Not very. And if you do, it's easier in your daw.

In short, save ya money!

The age of simple 90's bi-quad filters is long past us , but if you can't hear the difference that's good for you

i also have volcano but rarely use it. dunno why tbh, it's good. but i usually use filter... more rudimentary. cutoff and colour/resonance. and Volcano has so much controls it annoys me so i just open runciter and use that instead

Another and different option is to use the free Voltage Modular Nucleus and buy the fantastic Vult filters for it. I use them both in software (Voltage Modular & VCV) and hardware (Eurorack).
