The 2600 - does anybody know how to use it - for musical purposes?

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

This clearly shows you know shit about synths in general , signal flow .lfm wrote: Mon Dec 07, 2020 2:05 pmLots of patchpoints and huge panel does not impress me.gentleclockdivider wrote: Mon Dec 07, 2020 1:35 pm Do you need to be convinced that a car can actually drive and take you from point A to B when there's a peacock behind the steering wheel ?
If you do this either means you don't know the inner workings of a car , or you have to much trust in the peacock![]()
Looked more like a mainframe computer from the 50's.
The hype quite a few showed at Korg forum suggested this would really be a piece worth owning. Even at Korg pricetag.
And all the "peacocks" I saw on YT suggest the opposite.
So wanted samples of the former - the hype - to see what that was about.
So far it seems more like nostalgia hitting people like corona - and their wallet goes up in flames. Even if Behringer allow it to be a match lighting....
If you knew the basic understanding of vco , vca ,vcf , ring mod , contour generators and the multiple patchpoints and inputs ( try reading the legends , there are there for a reason ) , you should know .
Instead you go searching on you tube for some videos only to be presented with Bleep videos , if you tube is your only frame of reference ..damn

But that is decent demo. I missed that one since I sort on upload date and though user demos now would be the best among users, also final version probably of hardware and such.
Thanks.

Module count/capability of 2600 not vastly bigger than Odyssey.
It is basically an Odyssey with LOTS of extra patch jacks added. If a masochist with nothing better to do with a soldering iron and a few weeks spare time were to take an Odyssey and add patch jacks from everything to everywhere else, the result would be roughly equivalent in capability to a 2600.
I am not disrespecting the 2600. If somebody needs all those patch points to make patches they want then sure it ia lots more flexible/powerful than an Odyaaey.
Just trying for perspective. It will AT LEAST make most of the sounds of an Odyssey, though 2600 might take more patch cords and knob twiddling to get some of them.
So maybe an Odyssey would be a better meat and potatoes melodic performance synth even though 2600 could nail the same sounds.
But 2600 does have a little more module features and the patch points facilitate various bleeps and bloops perhaps difficult to make on an unmodified Odyssey.

The Odyssey was the stripped down version of a 2600. Not the other way round...

Yeah, thats what I said. Original question was "what musical purposes of 2600" and I commented "at least as big musical palette as an Odyssey".Tj Shredder wrote: Sat Jan 16, 2021 8:24 pm The Odyssey was the stripped down version of a 2600. Not the other way round...
The behringer 2600 looks "a little better" than the original 2600, for example an extra dedicated LFO. Original Arp 2600 "in practice" didn't usually have any more audio oscillators than an Odyssey because you had to dedicate one of the three as an LFO (if you wanted LFO in a patch).
Personally I still think the 2600's main "practical extra power" over an Odyssey is that the few extra modules and all the patch points vastly expand the 2600 palette of bleeps, bloops and twitters. Some folks think bleeps, bloops and twitters are music so fair enough I suppose.
However I rarely use bleeps and bloops in "music", therefore for my purposes the "useful music palette" of a 2600 wouldn't be much bigger than an Odyssey. It is just idle useless conversation anyway. Though I enjoyed both Odyssey and 2600 in the 1970's, have absolutely no interest in either one nowadays. Got tired of that sound long ago.
