What we need is a Max4all!
Max started out as a totally separate application, and although it's heavily integrated (and owned) by Ableton it's still available stand alone and could be used by any DAW through system MIDI. Regular price is $400. Not sure if Stepic would be a good experience or not since they seem to use Ableton features.

Do you need Ableton to use Max: https://support.cycling74.com/hc/en-us/ ... e-devices-

For an extra $200 (aka $600 total) you could get Live Standard + M4L, probably much cheaper if purchased used or on sale.

I think it's a pretty good investment with the huge ecosystem of plugins available for Max.
I was thinking of getting the oldest Live Suite that will work with Windows 10.
This is if an old M4L can host the latest devices. My interest is primarily for midi devices.

I was not aware that if one owns Live Standard they then can buy M4L.

Good to know that M4L devices will work in Max. Max I understand is a stand-alone.
If the M4L devices work in Max then what it the oldest version of Max that will work in Windows 10?
I assume that oldest is also the lowest priced.

Mulab sells their Mux separately and that is why I mentioned Max4all Plugin.
Perhaps I should have said M4LforALL VST.

I am waiting to see how useful Architect will be.

I hope that there will be third party midi modules developed for Architect.
Perhaps the same developers that make the devices for M4L.

Want to thank you guys for the heads up on Phrasebox! Great tool :)

How do you get on the beta email list?

As for Architect, I don’t have much faith that it’ll ever get out of beta, I bought my beta license 2 years ago...

If you own it, you're on the list automatically.

I do own it since last year, however still haven't receive any beta stuff and can't see any beta product in my account.

Live 9 is the earliest that supports Windows 10. It uses Max 7.

Latest devices will need the newest Max version usually. Stepic needs Max 8 and I'm guessing Live 11 will run Max 9.

Interestingly Stepic uses a VST3 plugin with the M4L device so maybe a VST version is in the future. From what I understand VST3 and MIDI is kind of a mess which might be why they're using M4L with it.

The Stepic VST (Win 10) doesn't load for me so no fun with it yet.
Kalamata Kid wrote: Sun Jan 31, 2021 8:09 am I was not aware that if one owns Live Standard they then can buy M4L.
Yeah, it's currently $160 (on sale from $200). If you can get a good deal on a used Live Standard license it might be a decent way to go but otherwise I feel like it starts getting too close to the Suite price.

I was wrong about Standard pricing before - Standard is $360 (on sale from $450). So a new Standard license + M4L would be $520 on sale. Suite is on sale for $600 and includes so much more for that $80. It's only money right?
Kalamata Kid wrote: Sun Jan 31, 2021 8:09 am Good to know that M4L devices will work in Max. Max I understand is a stand-alone.
(Disclaimer: I am not a Max dev). As long as the developer doesn't depend on any Live APIs or Live devices then yes. They usually specify what it's compatible with. If you're browsing on the Max for Live Device site they specify the version used on each device.

According to the System Requirements at the bottom of Devicemeister's page, Stepic can use either Max for Live or regular Max 8.

I'd wager Max 7 but I've never seen a Max license for sale on the used market.

I seem to think I remember a VST export function being discussed for Max devices, but I don't know what came of that. Now that Ableton owns them I wouldn't expect it to ever materialize. But who knows. If you had told me Reason would support VSTs a few years ago I would have been skeptical about that too. :)

Same!! Architect looks like it could be fun, I've been watching it for a while. Hopefully it's being designed in a way that will attract third party development. Things like being able to export and import devices, protect devices (locking editing/encryption/etc), add custom graphics, provide a marketplace, provide a way for paid devices to register/activate, etc.

If the barriers to share devices are low and the user base is large it'd create it's own little market just like Max. Those are both tall orders though.

j0lt,
Thanks for the detailed reply.
Live suite and Max are a bit expensive.
Every time I see a new midi device released for M4L I get excited and wish I had LIve.

Took stock of what I have or might get:
I do have many midi VSTi fx plugins and such but the thirst for more continues.
Architect
Reaktor
Reason Players

Kontakt
Bidule
Midi Lab
Studio One has some
But gotta say M4L has many good/great midi devices.

Some with two or more midi FX

I am a bit worried about HGSounds. I love his stuff, but he has not been active it seems for over a year.

You guys just keep hoarding plugins insearch of the holy grail
As been said numerous times , Loomer architect is at the top of the list , much easier to use compared to the max language , and it has great modules and fantastic sequencers from the get go , can run standalone and as a vst plugin , and most importantly 'Rock solid timing'
But please , keep searching ...
