I figure anyone who took the time to enter and avoid those major problems deserves a two even if I don't like the style/song/sounds.

I check it every month. It's helpful in its own way. ohhhh ... hornet's nest and stirring
I think I have only ever given a track a 1 once (other than mine, of course!), and this track clearly made no attempt at composition, no sound design (ALL presets, and most were inappropriate), no song structure, no mixing (all centred as well), no mastering evident. I just could not even compare it to my lowest ranked track in any way.
In the above case, giving the track a 2 would indeed have been a huge insult to those ranked 2!
I do try to be objective and subjective. Harder when you are not into some genres, or even understand them. At an age when my first records were things like Living Doll by Cliff, various Bill Hayley tracks and so on (ie early 1950's), my exposure (and involvement) to many genres over time, classical, blues, rock, jazz, prog rock, etc to electronica and musique conrete, hopefully lets me make reasonable judgements, and make some sensible comments (and get corrected sometimes).
I simply do the OSC each month (good or bad!), to keep my musical mind alive and kicking, and to have fun. Also, talking with and learning from other musicians here is also really beneficial.
Just hope you don't think I'm going to drop every one to a 1
dB
PS Some old fart called DoctorBob keeps giving me 1's ...

I like being forced to use the synth for sound design, it's very beneficial to me learning sound design. The comments are helpful. Me personally i don't think the 1s are unhelpful and i'm quite sure i've had some. However I am "in it to win it" (i'd like to finish higher in the table) so i'll "keep on keeping on" at the OSC, and i get some nice synths which i would've overlooked. I made a cool track with Pendulate the day before yesterday.doctorbob wrote: Wed Feb 10, 2021 3:05 pm ohhhh ... hornet's nest and stirringI think I have only ever given a track a 1 once (other than mine, of course!), and this track clearly made no attempt at composition, no sound design (ALL presets, and most were inappropriate), no song structure, no mixing (all centred as well), no mastering evident. I think we all agreed that any personal decision how to vote is acceptable. In the end it will level out anyway. As we have enough entries most of the time statistics apply. The real value of OSC is getting into creating and delivering. Winning is just the icing on the cake...

I would like to see a statistic on synths used here, that's kind of interesting, but I'm too lazy to make it myself, haha. Didn't exactly expect so many Dexed, mostly because it didn't cross my mind that it was a faithful replica of the DX7, haha. I almost wonder, if it sounds better? Loved this thing, too. But I've been thrilled about the Monofury for sure.
...anyway, still some work to do with the voting... (uh, currently listening to a sort of remix of 80's Kraftwerk song "Model"? No idea what it was called again)...haha... anyway...

Yeah MrT, Dexed is quite a faithful DX-7 emulator, but so much easier to program vs the "real thing". My DX was easier with fewer choices being a 4-op beast vs a 6-op beast. No filters makes them interesting as synths, and we had to remember these are OLD things, but still around in live settings, not just museums. Most need some tlc, and new batteries. Also, the original DX's had very poor MIDI implementations. Luckily the DX-11 was better. Aftertouch was quite crude being full keyboard/polyphonic only. Linking it to various parameters is interesting and can give the player some more "control" over e.g. timbre, lfo speed etc.
My breakdown goes: 5:8, 4:14, 3:23, 2:7, 1:1

AAhhh, that's cool! Thank you, Rob!
And THANKS, TJ, of course!
...yeah, had a feeling that Synth1 would take the cake, but I'm only just about half through voting.
And THANKS, TJ, of course!

You need to understand how different we all are: different levels, different evaluation criteria, and different motivations for participating in the OSC. Therefore, the best thing anyone can do - understand this and not be offended!
For me personally, 1-5, if trivial, is: terrible, bad, normal, good, perfect. So I rarely put 2 and (it seems) never 1. This month I gave 3 threes, ~500 fours and ~1000000 fives (and 1 one, well, yes, that guy with the old organ was terrible...), and I will continue to rate this way, despite the fact that this may lower me by 1-2 positions in the rating. I always pay more attention to music composition than mixing/mastering, DoctorBob almost always pleases us with wonderful retro music, TJ Shredder is the genius of his Linnstrument, Impedance Music pleases with beautiful synthwave, Darksynth FX is always good in its genre... everyone knows what they're doing!
But someone is experimenting, and someone is just doing something well, and everyone evaluates in their own way, so if you think about it, the scores in OSC have a large percentage of chaos, so the most likely way to win is not to try to win, but to look for your inspiration and your best way for music creation!
And then no rating systems will be able to stop you, because in all cases the maximum - is Beautiful!
P.S. The only thing that pisses me off the most is coming home from work and finding out that I completely missed an interesting discussion... GRRR!!! So sorry for the long emotional outpourings!
