Adding "Grit" or "Rasp" to Vocals - any vst plugin suggestions appreciated

Audiority's Blue Face (Fuzz Face emulation) will do this nicely: Process in parallel and maybe attenuate some frequencies with a bell filter after gain staging into the plugin and then use a compensatory filter after the distortion before mixing the resultant signal against the original.
And has already been mentioned: Maybe chain-smoke for a few years.

I don't know about "rasp", which is more a singer idiosyncracy type thing to me, but if you want color I'd look first at MJUC by Klanghelm. I'd ignore their other plugins for now unless you want to really nerd out (in which case, go for it!).

Nope. Waveform is 64 bits only. You'd need to use something like jBridge.
FL Studio has its own bit bridge, though. Seems to work quite well.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

I have a clean sounding voice and prefer it to have a bit more character for many of the songs I do.
plz listen to Warren Huart where he explains the "vocal thickener" techniques. (free on YT)
you have to fine-tune for your own situation.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Geat a vocalist with grit. Technology won't cut it.
If it were easy, anybody could do it!

I don't have a great voice for singing, but when I get a cold, it transforms into something nifty sometimes. I wonder if there are temporary ways to get cold-like symptoms. I'm allergic to onions and garlic a bit, and they can make my throat sore. Maybe I'll experiment if I think of a good tune for it.
Also, some years ago, I saw articles and videos about a vocal coach who had been teaching rock and roll and heavy metal types on how to scream-sing without ruining their vocal cords/throats. I wonder if some of her techniques might assist one in getting the gravel sound. I always wondered how that Linkin Park singer could do those prolonged screaming parts.
Also, once, when I was so pissed from work, on my drive home, through the country, I let out a good number of screams. My voice was raspy afterwards.

Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

Maybe try throwing things at it until something sticks. Actual producers have been known to do that.

Practice yer Manchestoh accent, before you know it you'll be able to sing using your nose alone.Dirtgrain wrote: Thu Feb 11, 2021 11:23 pm I don't have a great voice for singing, but when I get a cold, it transforms into something nifty sometimes. ..Err, on the original question..effects can help, but really 90% is down to attitude. Doesn't even have to be done loudly, it's about getting into the right frame of mind and being confident and giving it some 'swagger' - the sound will come naturally.
If you're starting off with..'well I haven't got the voice, I can't do this', then you probably won't. Bit more of the old, 'f**k it, lets do this bizzle' required!

A tad bit of distortion can make a vocal pop out in the mix.
There are so many distortion plugins available these days.
Saturn is one of many that can do a good job.

Too bad Metal Demon was never updated to 64 bit.

Just listen to the before/after MP3 on that page to hear how much grit and rasp you can add to your vocals.

I like using Soundtoys' Radiator for extra warmth on a vocal
