Is there any windows software one can create, edit impulse response files? Or when it can be done without maybe a good tutorial about the subject out there? Thanks

GratisVolver (free) for creating IRs via sine sweep method.

If its not a sweep file but just the impulse response, any audio editor can do... But you need a basic understanding what convolving means... Shortening a reverb (apply an envelope) or filtering would be pretty straight...

You can do it with MConvolutionMB, MCabinet and MFreeformEQ. Which one to use will depend on your intended use, but all of them can create IRs and technically edit them although some are better at others for that use. You can also do it in your DAW, but it is a bit of a pain.

Thank you. I'll take a deeper look at MConvolutionMB.

Off topic: I wish Melds would offer an customer-bundle :D

I've read in the manual a bit (no time to test the plugin itself) and while there is the possibility to create an IR I cannot see the option to export it. And what kind of files can the plugin read?

What do you want to capture as impulse responses exactly?

Physical places and cabinets or software reverb plugins in the box?

For ITB reverb IR sample process all you need is a one sample 0dBfs spike (aka dirac).

Dirac method walkthrough plus download: http://www.noisetime.com/impulsecreation.html

Can relatively easy be done for free in your DAW.

Set up 3 different project DAW templates:

Mono = 1 channel (1 pass)
Mono to Stereo = 2 channels (1 pass)
True Stereo = 4 channels (2 pass or with a cloned/copied source reverb plugin)

You should be able to load these resulting IRs (WAVs) in any IR player of choice assumed proper file format in the 4 ch true stereo case.

Thank you for the hints.
I just recently started to get more interested in convolution stuff. What I aiming for is to capture reverb IRs from different environments. I'm looking for a portable and usable solution so that I can capture IRs on the road. But probably it's an effort not worth without a proper hq mic anyhow

AFAIK for capturing real spaces the sine sweep method is to prefer. You not only need good pair stereo microphones but also a mono (or even stereo for true stereo IRs) playback system to excite the place with the sine sweep.

You have asked for a tutorial: How To Capture An Impulse Response Of A Space And Create A Convolution Plugin Preset

If you were to sell it as a product I'd expect that. But for personal use a portable recorder, balloon, and something to pop it with is very portable and GoodEnuff™. Two best things: you're not annoying people with a sine sweep, and you don't need to process the audio beyond trimming it.

Then there are varying levels of fancy. When I travel I bring a tripod to stabilize and place the recorder at ear height (also doubles as a tripod for my camera). There are portable Bluetooth speakers, put a sine sweep on your phone and a way to put the speaker where it needs to be. Relatively portable kit you can bring anywhere.

I'm going to massage them with EQ, amplitude envelopes, etc. to fit the mix anyway. So any coloration in the equipment is not a big deal. If you really wanted to you can flatten the sine sweep for the speaker frequency response, flatten your recorder/mic's frequency response, etc..

If for some reason I had access to a mostly prohibited space then I'd be bringing and setting up good equipment to benefit others. But take a look at freesound.org, people are using balloons, handclaps, etc..
