Because then you won´t get any more updates for V2 in the future. If you buy Trash V2 it will maybe last for a couple of years, then if you´ll change OS, as anybody has to do sooner or later, you will have to rely on what Izotope has chosen to put in Trash V3, a cut down version of V2 or not.

You´re basically stuck with a pretty expensive software subscription that you will have to pay updates for regularly. Most consumers don´t think ahead, I guess, but again others would want to know if the company you invest your money in for the long haul is worth it. My longterm experience with Izotope says it is not.
What updates do you need?

Ive got plugins I bought over 10 years ago, Ive used them on at least 3 Windows versions and they work fine, I fully expect them to run just the same under Windows 10.

The sky will not fall on your head, unless your on a Mac OS :dog:
Take a look at this thread and see what happens when the updates end, "(Izotope) Spectron - running out of hosts that support it", http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 6&t=443740

I rest my case.
Again... buy it for what it is today. You can't do anything more than that. I picked up Trash 2 on discount. If the company were to be bought out, or if the plugin stopped being supported in 2 years from now I would be fine simply because I intend to get my money worth of using it today. It is a calculated decision as all purchases should be.

As much as I wish everything continued to be functional for many years to come, the reality is that some companies close shop, some companies are bought out, some companies discontinue products and support... Then on top of that there are OS changes, host changes, hardware dependent changes... Well, I hope you get it... There's a lot of uncertainty in the future.

So again... buy something at the price that you are willing to accept as it may become a loss down the road.

Buying a product is not an investment... We are not given stock options in a company with each purchase and truth be told, these companies don't owe us anything beyond fulfilling our initial purchase (but we sure do like when they gives us more).

There is very little to be guaranteed in anything, let alone with software. If you think Izotope makes for a bad purchase, then don't buy it. I personally see nothing different from any other company because at anytime our current products could easily be labeled legacy products and that would be that. Its a risk... it is always a risk.

Sure, that´s why I warn against investing in Izotope, with their expensive updates etc.

Do you work for a company? In that case, please tell me which company, so I don´t buy any of your products.

"If you think Izotope makes for a bad purchase, then don't buy it."

Exactly.

You know you don't own part of company when you buy a product. This is not news.

Otherwise we appear to be in agreement, except we differ on what's an acceptable price for purchasing Izotope software, but there is no standard here... That's up to the individual considering a purchase.

"You know you don't own part of company when you buy a product."

Of course.

But here we deal with companies that sell software, that rely on computer operating systems, OS, in order to work. You, as a consumer, therefore has an interest in which software companies that you can trust in the long run, providing (reasonable priced, if at all) updates when the OS changes over time, etc.

When you say "these companies don't owe us anything beyond fulfilling our initial purchase", you don´t seem to have the interests of consumers, visiting KvR to make a sensible purchase decision, in mind.

In the long run, do you want to support 1) a company that just takes your money, as much as possible, and runs, or 2) a company that wants to treat you as a consumer with good longterm relations and respect?

The choice you make, helps to change the company culture of the business in one of the directions.

Again, connecting to the question in the beginning, my opinion on why Trash 2 should not get much love, is that Izotope lately seems to have taken the former 1) direction.

I am a consumer just like you. What I wrote is true.

When you buy these products there is no guarantee or commitment from the seller. None. This is reality.

Does it mean you have to stay quiet? Absolutely not. In fact I think its why no one should prevent anyone from participating in any of these threads where they are bashing a company, or bashing their choice in protection methods... Its all fair game and new users deserve to know potential risks... and make a decision that suits them.

My post is advice. I've now had and purchased numerous products that have become legacy software, in some cases simply they were discontinued and relabeled as new products without upgrade paths *cough NI, cough cough* as well as others where the company closed up shop. What I wrote is based on experience and its important for users to be aware of.

I don't care to entertain idealism and talk about what we should expect in regards to long term relationships because the reality is that there is absolutely no guarantee these will be long term relationships. If someone told me at the beginning of 2014 that Camel Audio would be bought out by Apple, I would not have believed them... They were great communicators that offered great support (IMO even all the to very end) Hell, there may even be some now that don't believe it.

This is the reality of what we buy. It is important to understand that when you purchase something, take consideration of the price and expected usage from it, because there is no guarantee it will work in the future.

I feel your pain about NI and Camel Audio. Believe me, I´ve been there too in similar situations, many times.

Bottom line, I think we both agree, that, concerning YOUR, somewhat jaded, advice, the consumer - of course - should invest in what there is now, since there are no guarantees for anything. A giant meteorite could wipe out the whole human civilization tomorrow, and there would be no reason to expect any software updates anymore whatsoever.

And we also agree, I think, on MY - at least as jaded - advice, that every consumer, idealistic or not, with every purchase decision, helps change a company and a business for the worse or for the better concerning how the companies in question treat their consumers in the long run.

Post

Yes, including giant meteorite but certainly not limited to such an occurrence.

And yes... buy what it offered now, not what you expect it offer later.

And... Well I definitely believe one of the only powers we have as a consumer is the decision to buy or not to buy.

But as far as influence or change... that depends entirely on the company, developer, owners. There's nothing to expect. Some are more willing to listen than others.

I do think KVR *can be* a great place to discover if a company does listen to their users as well as if they don't. For many this is valuable information, and others not so much.

YMMV

Trash 2 + Expansions for ≈9 bucks @pluginboutique ... Is it worth to get or is it just a collectors item?

quite worth it, still a stellar effects plugin, in my opinion.

Post

Yes it is an insane plugin, way more worth $9!
It is very flexible, from full band gentle overdrive to multiband distortion madness to totally experimental sound design territory with the convolver, the 2 EQ/filters and the delays. And it sounds good.It can be a cpu killer though, when you are using all the modules, oversampled.
Lovely distortion plugin really. The two other distortion plugins that could be compared to are Fabfilter Saturn and Ohmforce Ohmicide but they are less advanced IMO.Saturn is nicer for the modulations, but that's all.

Post

IZotope can’t be shifting any of these now to be selling for this price. I wonder want people are buying as the distortion of choice at the moment.

Post

There are a lot of great old products, and a lot of brand new customers hoping to become great, to whom the old products are largely unknown. When sales have peaked and virtually dried up, a few no-brainer sales can bring eyes to the rest of the product line, and potentially widen the base to enable bug fixes, more presets/sounds, and hopefully new versions.
We've seen NI add to GRig and Absynth, so maybe there is hope for Trash 2 and Iris 2 :scared:

As an aside, I've found Izotope support to be good.
I only wi$h U-he would licen$e out their copy protection
to $ome of the$e companie$

Cheers

For ultimate distortion, BlueCat's Axiom ampsim suite has internalized some great useful products, the componants can create all kinds of delightful sonic trouble, with the added benefit of Axiom's ability for hosting 3rd party plugins. Just for fun, I added Amplitube and Guitar Rig to an already energetic chain. There's still a dent in the sheetrock in the shape of a monitor speaker :hihi:
