Is it true that you can have too much RAM for a given CPU?
If so, is 32 GB RAM too much for an Intel i5 10th generation equivalent processor (no overclocking)?
Thanks!

Nope. At least not as far as I know.Domenico KVR wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 4:33 pm Is it true that you can have too much RAM for a given CPU?
If then, the mainboard limits.

If you use big Kontakt orchestral sample libraries, you want to go to 128GB RAM or more.
If not, 32GB is fine or even 16GB.
It depends on what you do...
The Task Manager can show the usage

You have to check the max ram the CPU/motherboard can handle.

Stupid question, I really didn't fiddle with sample libraries much so far: Let's say you have an orchestral library which is 16 GB all in all... does a sampler really load all the 16 GB immediately into memory? I know that, usually, such libraries come with violin, cello, horns etc., but, you can choose the instruments, and it always loads one instrument at a time.Pictus wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 5:22 pm If you use big Kontakt orchestral sample libraries, you want to go to 128GB RAM or more.
Do you maybe mean a full song with lots of instances of some library? 128 GB really seems excessive.

I do not use Kontakt, but look at what the heavy users wantschk071 wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 5:35 pm Do you maybe mean a full song with lots of instances of some library? 128 GB really seems excessive.

As chk071 remarked, 128GB looks very heavy. I had no idea Kontakt needed so much CPU.
But a simple solution, when using FL Studio, is exporting the Kontakt channel preset and saving it for later modification, and just rendering the Kontakt track to audio so you can get rid of the actual Kontakt plug-in inside your project. When you want to modify it again, just import the channel and score back into your project.
But for what actually regards my initial question on RAM exceeding the rest of the system's capacity, all your answers were very helpful and appreciated.
I shoudn't be going with more than 32GB RAM and I can see that motherboards pretty much all support this amount these days.
Thank you again. All the best.
