Hi
I was wondering which of Melodyne or Cubase's internal VariAudio you prefer and why?
Are there any things you can do in Melodyne that you can't do in VariAudio? VariAudio must be lighter on the CPU I assume?
Thanks so much for reading
Bless

I'm no expert and didn't use either of these products yet, but to my knowledge the biggest difference is that in Melodyne one can work with individual notes in polyphonic audio.

Only if you get one of the mindblowingly expensive versions that cost more than a DAW.

Pricey indeed, but is there any competing product that can do that black magic?

Not that I'm aware of.

I only use variaudio because it’s faster and more convenient. But melodyne is better in every way. I worked with one Grammy engineer and heprefered waves tune over melodyne because it sounded much natural especially on the top end
Main Computer Specs: MacBook M1 Max, 32GB, 4TB, Cubase 13.

In terms of sound quality, Waves is the best hands down to me. However it introduces a lot of latency and control is a nightmare. Melodyne GUI is perfect, flexible, fast, intuitive. Sound quality is lower to ensure zero latency operation. Variaudio is something between.

VariAudio used to use a lot of memory. If I did a lot of edits, it would slow my computer down a lot. Doing the same amount of edits in Melodyne did not slow my computer down. VariAudio may have been improved in this regard, it's been years since I last used it.

Earlier versions of Melodyne used to sound better after being exported. I don't think Melodyne Essential 5 has an export function, do the higher versions have it?

Wait a sec, people actually like waves tune??? I demo'ed that plugin and it sounded do bad I closed it and never opened it again after a couple of minutes. Now I'm mad I didn't give it more time before the demo expired.

In every version of Melodyne you can export (bounce) the audio content, of course.
The export is also a very stable way to work.

Are you referring to bouncing from the DAW or directly from Melodyne? I’m not seeing a Bounce or Export option in Essential. Where is it? Does it improve the sound?

Bouncing from the DAW, yes. 8)

I would be extremely surprised if the audio result was somehow different
from an "internal" bounce.

The first versions of Melodyne reduced the quality during editing, then internally exported at higher quality. I don’t know about now. Melodyne 5 sounds fine to me.

The version of melodyne I use ( pretty damn old) sounds better than variaudio to me and also is lighter on the cpu and more stable (variaudio is one of the few things that crashes cubase for me with no warning). I generally don't do very extreme processing with either though. Melodyne is handy for various quick fixes like a bad note here or there or slightly out of tune guitar.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

I use variaudio. The new control features they added are pretty incredible and speed up the process for me. To avoid any issues further on in a mix, I may render the edited track and then disable the original, to free up memory and CPU. When I'm working on huge projects (100+ tracks) this comes in very handy. I have to say, I have not used Melodyne. Variaudio is part of Nuendo and works perfect. I see no need to buy anything else.
