There's a lot of love for these across the production communities i can see, but i just found them to be posh clippers. beyond some peak management i wouldn't find any use for them, and certainly wouldn't say their sound was cruel or harsh, or even that they broke up at all well.

In terms of plugins i think only the older ones would fit the criteria the OP is looking for. Neural DSP can do brutal distortion well, but it has a sophistication about it. The original Quadrafuzz can get pretty harsh, Ohmicide too and definitely BloodOverdrive in FL Studio. Lol, that one is aliasing hell, and the clipping is N A S T Y. I imagine some early generation amp models could sound pretty nasty too e.g Steinbergs Warp

It's not a bad idea to go for real analog here, or make sure the plugin has loads of oversampling.

There are plugins that can do harsh good and harsh bad.

I recommend Trash 2 (which has already been mentioned).

Unfiltered Audio are also very good!
