Design blog post: https://www.reasonstudios.com/blog/the- ... f-algoritm
With nine operator slots that you can connect any way you want, Algoritm takes FM synthesis to a new level. Classic FM operators are at the heart of Algoritm, but each slot can also house a wavetable oscillator, shaper, or filter for a wealth of both familiar and new sounds. This is an instrument designed to make it fun and easy to explore the world of FM, a type of synthesis known for being unapproachable and obtuse for anyone but the most invested.

Algoritm comes stacked with modulation capabilities and sound-shaping effects to finish your sounds. With the three built-in LFOs and two flexible Curves, you can add complex movement far beyond the classic envelopes of FM. The effects include key ingredients to sound great, like reverb and delay, but also a unique unison section for a thicker sound and a resonator with loads of character.

If you don’t want to dive head first into the depths of frequency modulation, you can still reach the deepest levels of sound complexity by rolling the dice with the Randomizer. Just drag it to morph the chosen synth parameters into an endless source of new sounds. Or use any of the over 250 expertly crafted patches for a taste of the incredible sounds you can make with Algoritm.

Features:
  • Nine operator slots each configurable as an FM operator, wavetable oscillator, multi-mode filter, or shaper
  • Freely connect the operator slots to create your algorithms
  • Create both classic FM sounds and brand new hybrid tones
  • Randomizer function to morph any patch into new sounds
  • Expansive set of modulation sources and effects
  • Over 250 patches to fuel new songs

Even if I haven't been totally happy with RS lately I have to admit I think it's a nice take on FM (going by just the video).

Adsr envelopes only , what were they thinking ?

We were thinking that there are tons of synths already emulating the DX7 and we wanted to build something different, that ADSR's easy to work with and understand, and that you can create many of the classic patches (and tons of new ones) well enough with ADSR. It was a conscious design decision, but I get that it's a controversial decision for FM aficionados.

We did add two flexible curve generators to allow for more complex envelopes too, though. They can be stepped or smooth, one-shot or cycling, up to 16 segments, bipolar or unipolar, sync'd or free running, global or per voice. They help adding some more complex movement, should you need it.

There's also quite a few ways to get more advanced envelopes. You can route another envelope or curve from another slot and mix that with the operator's own envelope, you can use curve only, you can route a secondary envelope to the attack or decay to change the curve of the envelopes. There's a few patches utilizing this, including the “ClassicFM-CALIOPE" where it's set up to work closely to the DX7 envelopes.

Hope that answers the question!

This has nothing to with emulating a dx7 .
I get it that for some people the level/rate envelopes can be hard to grasp but once it's understood you don't want to look back ..especially when it comes to fm .
Most people don't really understand that you can get instant results with level/rate envelopes by just adjusting two parameters .

+ one can take any CV signal from elsewhere in the Rack (or outside of it, too) and patch it into Algoritm via CV Inputs on the back and then use Mod Matrix to map it to something. Page #33 onwards in the very good User Manual:

I'd say lack of modulation options is a non-issue with Reason

I understand your point, I use quite complex envelopes in my Eurorack system and do appreciate the DX7 approach, too, for more expressive sounds. We made the choice with Algoritm to make the envelopes more approachable, so it is what it is. Anyway, hope you'll check it out anyway! It can do a lot of awesome sounds anyway, and when you dive in to the mod matrix there's a lot of minute control.

I looks like a great synth , but I am already well covered with fm synthesis ( nord modular , yamaha tg77 , tranzistow )

The random feature is just perfect! Was able to produce beautiful and wild sounds and variations of presets right away. This might be a new Reason classic. :D

Rent to own! Nice.

That's been an option for at least 3 years...

Goes to show how long I’ve been away from the Reason platform then.

Wow looks awesome

Goes far beyond FM synthesis, and the randomizer is real plus for fresh sounds start in a second

And that is the best thing about it :)
