When electronic music sounded new, like the future... what went wrong!

the biggest issue we have today are the presets. it's real hard to express yourself with someone else's sounds. i often buy an instrument specifically to make a certain sound for my music, only to find that it's already done and everyone else has the same sound. what am i supposed to do with this? i'm having troubles overcoming that. i usually solve it by turning off all the affects and throwing outboard affects on it. not sure what else to do.

Then don't use presets? Or tweak them more. Or get into modular (and if it's software modular, don't use the presets). Or pick a random sample, granulize it and shape it into something new. Or use simpler synth sounds and go much heavier with FX to make them unique (like a guitarist). Or some of each.

depends on the preset, but leads and basses for example, are just instruments, play them?Dasheesh wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 8:22 am the biggest issue we have today are the presets. it's real hard to express yourself with someone else's sounds. i often buy an instrument specifically to make a certain sound for my music, only to find that it's already done and everyone else has the same sound. what am i supposed to do with this? i'm having troubles overcoming that. i usually solve it by turning off all the affects and throwing outboard affects on it. not sure what else to do.

The problem, as I see it, is that you're conflating presets with music. If presets were so important, sound designers would be selling out arenas and people would pay top dollar to hear 128 patches, all played at middle C. But, seriously, I can't even tell if you're trolling or not, but you have a practically endless array of sounds at your fingertips these days. Just because many of the sound designers are making generally the same range of sounds, doesn't mean that isn't a ton of room for exploration. Sound designers tend to make sounds that are popular so that they can make money (or to make the synth developers money, if they're creating factory banks). Not only that, you have even more endless opportunities by modulating parameters, automating them with your DAW to get them changing over time, layering them with other sounds, etc. And, in the bigger picture, make your music original by focusing on composition - that's far more important to creativity than the sounds you're using. IOW, stop blaming the presets for your lack of creativity, or you'll just continue to be frustrated.Dasheesh wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 8:22 am the biggest issue we have today are the presets. it's real hard to express yourself with someone else's sounds. i often buy an instrument specifically to make a certain sound for my music, only to find that it's already done and everyone else has the same sound. what am i supposed to do with this? i'm having troubles overcoming that. i usually solve it by turning off all the affects and throwing outboard affects on it. not sure what else to do.

we got to the future and realised it's much the same as the past, but with shinier, faster things.
