Music-X back in the Amiga days was my choice

one of the first to allow for non linear song arrangements, with sequences being able to play other sequences, which you can nest as many times as you like, which I used to great effect in my Jungle/drum and bass productions
You just draw in a play sequence command, much like penciling in a note in the note editor, and not unlike song arranging in modern DAWs, but this happens inside the midi note editor

Another entry level DAW from the past - Cubasis VST.
It's version 5 on the photos here. It was a quite impressive program, more than enough tracks available for beginners, 24-bit recording, lots of effects and virtual instruments included.
In particular I liked the Steinberg-Wizoo acoustic and electric guitar instruments.

My first intro to music software was a scoring tool called MusicWorks (I got to play with this when I was 6 or so) and much later I used MoTU Digital Performer 3 and ProTools Free in a class in high school.

I still have the 1984 macintosh and the diskette for MusicWorks in my closet, if only the software wasn’t corrupt.

Funny thing, you get Mini vMac for Android and could run it on a 9” tablet to get the same screen size. But you don’t get it for iPads.
There are also Sheepshaver and Basilisk II which can emulate bigger old Apples...

Cakewalk Plasma 2003 - a loop based, early Sonar-like sequencer.
I tried to install it under Windows 10 but Plasma needs DirectX 8 which makes it difficult to run on modern systems.

Surprised no one has mentioned n-track studio. Couldn't afford pro-tools so I had to cut my teeth on this. I still remember the first time I got to play with blockfish on some drum tracks I recorded.

Did anyone here ever use Kinetic by Cakewalk? I bought it when they had a no-brainer sale of something like $15 with the intention that a singer/songwriter I was collaborating with would also buy it and we could share scratch tracks. But, that never really panned out and I was already a Sonar and Project5 user, so it ended up being a waste of lunch money for me. Still seemed like a pretty cool DAW for the money.

RealTime on the Atari ST. Phrases are clips, and everything could be created and edited while the music was playing. Possibly where the idea for Ableton came from.

I disagree. 5.5.1 for PC is very well known, BECAUSE it was the last.

I wonder what the Windows DAW landscape would look like today if Emagic had not been bought by Apple.
