Let's take a little trip down the memory lane...
What was the first 3rd party plugin you ever bought?
Mine was Waves' Kramer Master Tape and it cost $79 (back in 2012).

Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

TBL (The Base Line) from ReFx sometime in 2001 or 2002. Still works to this day although of course 32 bit only.

Earliest I can identify is Sync Modular in 2000.

FabFilter Pro-C, Oct 20, 2011 (according to my FF account).
I'd was just returning from a 10 hiatus from making music of any sort, during which time I didn't even have a DAW, and my old porta-studio/synths/mixer, guitar, &tc were in boxes. The previous year I'd bought Cubase Essential 5 and in 2011 bought the full version 6. I tried the free stuff, didn't like them. Still using it in most projects, on the side-chain for echo fx.

Audio Damage Dubstation.
That plugin was on 90% of my tracks for years
But I think I bought a Reaktor Ensemble before that. Some funky JD800 emulation. Pretty cool - I wish I would have made a backup of that one.
