I think it was Linplug RMIII drum machine. long time ago...

At that time, my source for sounds other than instruments directly recorded by me was to route MIDI tracks through my soundblaster card, using the built in soundfont capability. despite that horrendous workflow (with Cubase 5VST, with the printer port dongle, before sx and the current cubase line) I got more songs recorded then, than now. lol.

Something made for the Commodore Amiga ages ago... I used that Amiga for the sound and graphics for the weather information section in a TV station I worked for at the time. Can't even remember what it was. What I remember is that it took me quite a bit to convince my boss to get reimbursed (it wasn't cheap at all at the time).

Probably not THE first, but Camel Audio Alchemy comes to mind. At the time, I knew squat about synthesis, so I remember feeling overwhelmed. Especially because I thought you had to use EVERYTHING the synth had to offer, in EVERY patch. Not the best beginner's synth, certainly. But I got my synthesis chops on it, and the great articles from SOS on synthesis in general plus the manual, which I actually printed on real paper (those were the days) were my main reading material.

Come to think of it, maybe that was why I was particularly pissed when Camel sold out to Apple.

Technically this must have been this voyetra softsynth that came with the Sound Blaster Pro in 1993. Horrible sound and scared me away from softsynths for a long time. Zebra2 was the turning point and is still my favorite synth.

Wow, what a blast from the past. I'd forgotten all about TBL, but I used to love it many moons ago. Wonder how it holds up in 2021...
I just recently dropped the .dll on this system and it still works just fine and still sounds good but has been surpassed by other plugins like Image-Line's Transistor Bass for me anyway.....

Same, and same XD I was pretty salty when Apple bought them, but I moved on... still have a spot in my heart for those two, though.
