I just bought it a couple of days ago. It sounds very hard. The clipper is great. I love the "raw" preset, sounds great for techno. & the "old school" preset for techno. I really like the clipper.
Tho i also bought Elephant because it has different flavours which i think will be useful for other stuff.

The limiter was highly rated in a real indepth test of all software limiters but do you think I can find the article ? Someone on here posted it, it tested everything, one of the reasons I bought Limiter 6 in the first place.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

I always wondered how the modern Limiter 6 compares to the older version in terms of fidelity and cleanness?

This is one of the biggest differences between them, it's much refined technically. Basically the Precise and higher quality settings, but maybe even Eco.Kazi7 wrote: Wed Mar 10, 2021 10:37 am I always wondered how the modern Limiter 6 compares to the older version in terms of fidelity and cleanness?

I love all TDR stuff and the price is always on spot. However, Limiter 6 seems a little problematic for me and that’s because I’m really picky and I blame my naturally audiophile ears.
The unit seems to introduce an audible distortion when pushed just past a couple db or more and it don’t sound as transparent as I like. Other plugin is way more transparent.

Try to turn the Recovery knob up in the peak limiter, it could help with the distortion.Skyfall72 wrote: Fri Mar 19, 2021 6:34 pm The unit seems to introduce an audible distortion when pushed just past a couple db or more and it don’t sound as transparent as I like. i think it's one of the best limiters out there...
also have Nova GE and really like it but havent used it much recently, mostly of for CPU reasons...
projectts with CPU overloads everywhere are an issue when you just want to play; not export/bounce to audio, and Nova can get a bit on the heavy side on this (at least in my system)....
a suggestion..... (might help with audiophilish mental_ity_hear_ing systems or similar)
Personally most (80%+?) times i just use the HF and default Limiter option, gives a _ !!!!!SUBJEctivity Alert
!!!!!!! _ "nice clean subtle un-coloured colour
" unless you drive it too much [[ you can also.... UNDRIVE it
]] .
Plenty of options there too to adjust
.. a second tip...
Turning off/Unloading the modules you don't use; to me, sounds diferent than just bypassing them..
also sometimes echo mode sounds better then other Oversampling modes..... sometimes, try it out..

Seriously, please ignore my useless terminology if it cause you confusion rather than being helpful. I'm struggling to put it into better words. I'll try: What i meant was the music sounds hard after using the TDR Limiter 6. Plausibly the music was already hard to begin with, and it is other software that i'm making comparison to which was softening the music.
I don't really know where i have got my vocabulary and its connotations from. I think i might have been being inventive when i described the result of an audio limiter as "hard".
I do like hard house, and "hard" is a quality of music. for example hard techno, hard house, hard psy-trance. Maybe the connotations find their origin here.

Compression / Limiting will make material sound hard eventually once you overdo it. This is true for almost every compressor / limiter out there. You basically are flattening the natural dynamic response and create distortion / clipping at some point. You are killing the natural transients. This is not particular to TDR Limiter 6, which sounds perfectly fine if you set it correctly.
Sure, if you are into overcompressed Techno / EDM type of sounds go for it and overdo it, but don't blame the tool for sounding hard if you are intentionally setting it's parameters to output an overcompressed, hard sound. It's you who makes that choice, not the tool!

I was forced to start mastering a project all ITB recently (long story). Limiter6 is one of my least used TDR plugs (I beta test for them so have them all), because I nearly always preferred the workflow (not necessarily sound) of using StandardCLIP and Limitless to get the loudness up at the end of the chain. But I was looking for something to replace my outboard compressors (a pair of Chandler Germaniums), and remembered reading somewhere that the compressor in Limiter6 had a really cool, funky, analogue sounding Sigma mode. So I tried it out and it was great, worked a treat on this project. Working most of the time with deep Threshold and very low Ratio, no more than 1.5dB of GR, dual mono, rode the level very nicely and was pretty transparent. I'll be using it more!

I'm not blaming it! Limiting is part of the sound of hard techno, which is what i want. I bought TDR and Elephant. At 4db of gain reduction TDR sounds hard, whilst Elephant still doesn't sound as hard at 6db of gain reduction. I'm no expert about limiters though!Kazi7 wrote: Sun Mar 21, 2021 4:11 pm Compression / Limiting will make material sound hard eventually once you overdo it. So i'm using TDR for techno and Elephant for other things. I accept i might have indulged myself by having 2 limiters. I think Elephant has different colours, whilst TDR has the clipper which Elephant doesn't have.
Thanks for your contribution, you helped me out what i couldn't explain!

No, no! It is very helpful actually, audio is notoriously hard to put into words anyway. I have sort of the same impression from Limiter 6 and was curious if there was anything to it or not. I have no other limiter to compare to, so it is what i use. But hardness is definitely a word that makes sense to me (and like you say, it doesn't need to be a negative thing).Spring Goose wrote: Sun Mar 21, 2021 2:48 pm Seriously, please ignore my useless terminology if it cause you confusion rather than being helpful. But maybe i need to check out Elephant...
Btw, have you tried increasing Knee on clipper, and Recovery on peak limiter, to see if it changes the feeling of hardness?

I actually prefer the more fuzzy sound of the free version. It has a certain 3d ness/ seems to let dynamics through in a nice way. It is not as clean though.
edit: I think I prefer the GE version now on my new monitoring setup

To be fair, i haven't! I got the results i wanted from 3 of the... daggers ready!... presets. The fat preset, the raw preset, and the old school preset. Because of TDR's modular design it's like having 3 different limiters. TBH i haven't tried it on anything else except techno. I was demoing Elephant at the same time, and Elephant worked for everything else for me except techno. Elephant seemed a bit... "nice"... (decent, mild, tame) for my techno music. I dunno if "transparent" is the right term?cantaloupe wrote: Sun Mar 21, 2021 5:17 pmNo, no! It is very helpful actually, audio is notoriously hard to put into words anyway. So you own TDR? I'd say Elephant is worth checking out. I actually got Elephant for a good price because i was buying TEOTE at the same time, it was 20% discount for both plugins for getting 2 plugins at the same time. I think that is their regular offer. I read Voxengo owner/coder said he is most proudest of Elephant 4 along with SPAN.
