At least with this update we start to see the direction that the DAW is heading.

Chasing Pro Tools tail.

I think they have unashamedly and openly been going after the Pro Tools crowd for quite some time, I don't blame them!
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

I still see them mostly going after Logic and Cubase type.
The sound variations and its integration with sample libraries like VSL is slap to Cubase and Logic showing how articulation switching management should have been.
Same with Arranger Track. It was already better but the latest update is a nice addition for working on song structure without hassle and breaking the flow.
I am guessing 5.5 release will bring updated Sampler and Impact and more scoring features like video track etc.

True, but they are also chasing Pro-Tools.

Yes of course. Lots of previous features added to compete with Protools. Presonus treating Studio One as a ''best of'' with some cool ideas of their own mixed in.

Pretty obvious.

Did you never play "king of the castle" as a child ?

For anyone like myself who's spent hours mapping key switches, this is potentially huge:
- Dynamic mapping for third- party instruments (via new API for developers)

It will be, assuming the developers actually use the API, its all about uptake!
I assume their stuff (which is actually pretty good) like PreSonus Symphonic Orchestra will be update to take full advantage, and they seem to have some developers already using it, so fingers crossed....

So in practice if I am using the VST3 of say Equator 2 or Plasmonic (neither of which have a VST2 version) how does S1 handle recording poly aftertouch, poly pitch bends, slides etc - or does it just ignore that data completely?

Let me rephrase my question as, obviously, you didn't quite understand it. ;)

Which indicators do you see, regarding this new update, that they are "chasing Pro Tools"?

True, but they are also chasing Pro-Tools.
I think it was 3.3 where they did the "Next Standard" campaign to get more PT customers. They trying to balance it out, but the music production market has made them more popular. This area is pretty much dominating the market right now vs other customer bases. If you don't think so, who are the one's demonstrating Studio One the most via youtube, and the Atom controllers? It is music producers.

Yeh, they did a big campaign around that point, there were even videos for how to switch!
Since then I think they have gone for various niches to boost the user base, from bedroom producers, EDM guys (that step sequencer is really top of the game now, almost Elektron like with the little ATOM SQ) to live musicians...there is something for everyone :-)
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

The 3.0 release cycle was all about getting Pro Tools users to switch. There was some of that in 4.x cycle with some improvements to group editing to work more like Pro Tools. I don’t see much of anything in 5.x that screams “Pro Tools feature” to me.

I’d still very much like dual pans built right into the channel mixer like Pro Tools but that’s one obvious PT feature the S1 team has ignored to date.
