I know you don't like to hear that because it doesn't fit your view of the world, but as pointed out multiple times now, these are just plans. What matters is what gets implemented and for now there isn't even a prototype. Until then simply all options are open. It's a simple life lesson learned and seen by those who are not naively trusting everyone. And with Steinberg and all their actions for example regarding VST2 there simply is a grain of salt in things they say.
I appreciate though they think about about solutions for perpetual license users as well as offline studios.

Maybe it's me, but it's weird that a company leaves their (possible) license holders Alone in the Dark when it comes to their main assets: their licenses!
Now, that's just silly. Unfortunately, The Lawn of Silliness does not belong to Steinberg afaiac.

I'm wondering if there will be any performance improvements without using a dongle (quicker load up time, lower cpu useage?).
Also, I'm hoping this new dongleless protection doesn't require internet connection such as cloud licensing?

Maybe they should’ve just said nothing at all and waited to unveil it like a kinder egg surprise.

Hurray!
Best Cubase news since the introduction of VST, IMHO.
Although it will render my spare, unused dongle useless.
Got it when I started making music again after a long hiatus, and didn't remember having upgraded to the current dongle already.
Many years ago, I had to take a train to go get a replacement dongle, when the one I had suddenly died. No fun, and I was lucky the shop had my back (it was back when Steinberg had their own dongles made, the shop owner took one from a resale box as they weren't available separately AFAIK).

I don't think so, those are usually cracked from day 1.Daimonicon wrote: Wed Mar 10, 2021 8:18 pm I guess it will be something similar like Waves, Native Instruments use.
I hope they present a choice, so people like me who actually like the dongle can keep using it.

Hmmm...I don't tend to upgrade to next version - rather use the same one for years before. But as I'm older, money not that much of an issue, was vaguely thinking about upgrading from 10 already, even though TBH I'm still learning all the new stuff (I came in from a hiatus and last version used was SX2!). DEFINITELY not upgrading now. Will be interesting to see which way they go. Subscription? That will likely see me drop Cubase if they go that way. Machine based...not too much of a biggie, as I again don't upgrade my PC/laptop that often, but can't say I'm overkeen on the idea. I think I even prefer the dongle than being stuck to a single computer. Online somehow? Hmmm...we don't even have fibre out here yet, though the VDSL is OK (most of the time), but if it's online, I suspect fibre will be a necessary - again that means dropping Cubase. Depends on what requirements they intend.
TBH, I never had that many issues with the dongle. Even though I now migrated to laptop - I don't actually need more than 2 USBs for most of everything I do. 1 for sound, 1 for dongle, which leaves me 1 free if I needed to connect up synths etc. I suspect (may be wrong) that the noise about dongles is and was mainly from a very vociferous minority.
Ultimately they're going to go for some kind of strong copyright. Stupid not to IMO.
Why is it I have this nagging feeling that they're going to jump from a system that riles up a handful of people to one that will rile up a majority of users?

IMO the only copy protection that works is a constant stream of small updates/bug fixes (like every few months) so that the WAREZ version is always out of date!
Eventually people who are serious about what they do will realise what an utter PITA is it constantly downloading possible virus ridden and broken older versions of software with no support.

Does anyone know roughly when the new copy protection will be changed?

I suspect the ones that are in the know are also the ones silenced under a NDA.dickiefunk wrote: Thu Mar 11, 2021 9:33 am Does anyone know roughly when the new copy protection will be changed?
