I recently bought the Audio Tech MX40. Pretty good headphone but just make sure the cups fit your ear profile. Mine presses on the top part of my ears and get uncomfortable after several hours. (My ears might be bigger than average).

There is no single "industry standard" for headphones, and while I can see using these for tracking - they are good quality headphones overall - they are notoriously bass-heavy and so not IMO advisable for mixing.

Koss Porta Pro used to be real cheap, but delivered pretty good sound all things considered.

I remember seeing a live stream where Eprom (@eprombeats) talks about how he likes using the cheaper model HIFIMAN planar magnetic headphones for live streaming and general things. Considering the price and someone of his caliber recommending them even for streaming I would consider them a great introductory model.

Yes, we used them as chaep 'phones at the music software company I was working for. Considering they're pretty expensive nowadays, and honestly not that fantastic, I'd suggest the Soundelux 681's over the Koss.

I hope some of you on a tight budget like myself , esp due to Covid and work issues , can Learn a jewel that I take seriously as Ask.video or MacProVideo are the most incredible school for tutorials and this is what my most respected teacher told me, “yeah , those $200 senheiser closed or $300 beyerdynamic open 770 990 1990 etc are amazing and will give you accurate mixes but that isn’t always useful - what you need are Great reference studio monitors and just a cheap pair of Apple air buds you get in any iPhone, iPad or iPod or anywhere. While you are mixing and mastering and hearing the components together , reference monitor are what is most important . But Most people just use iPhone buds so why spend money to reproduce what your hearing in your studio....save some money and you’ll also be hearing what MoST people who listen to on iTunes and SoundCloud and reverb do it on their iphone buds... so you’ll hear what they hear after you’ve worked on the final mix down”

I have akg 702. for mixing ,eq work, separating sounds, stereo field sound design, they do the job very well. I am looking to pick up a pair of beyerdynamic 770's to try to compliment them. the akg's are cheap in headphone prices compared to much more expensive pairs. I have tried out superlux headphones and they are really good value but of the ones I have tried I would not mix on them. they are perfectly good for arrangement, tracking and reference though.

the cheapest best headphone for mixing is the cheapest decent headphones you can learn the sound of...

AKG K240 that you know the sound really well (idk... 2000 hours spent lisening to music on them) is better than a high end headphone that you only spent a couple of days/weeks with.

Buy something that is comfortable (you tried them on) and is from a reputable manufacturer (=reliable) and start putting those hours in...
