Too bad that they still didn't hire a graphics designer. The UI is quite an eyesore, looks like a cheap Windows app from the 1990s.

Or, if you work with SAP ERP it looks like it's from the future.

To be fair, it looks a bit better on Windows and Mac.

Also, in the past I have successfully used the 32-bit FL Studio VSTi to use a 64-bit synth inside a 32-bit sequencer. YMMV. Audacity is certainly not a full-feature DAW, but it does great as a multi-feature digital tape recorder.

Not sure what one would use it for in times with Reaper being somewhat free or S1 Prime and such. I like Audacity though for it being able to record via WASAPI. Helped me a couple times now.

A good audio editor is still needed. It's kind of more in the category of Adobe Audition, or Izotope RX. I wouldn't use it as a DAW, though it does have the capability and maybe one day they will focus more on that but I see it as a really nice free audio editor first before anything else.

I still use it for MP3 conversion, it's just super quick and easy (drag and drop). I personally find it a pain to do almost anything else, but I think it's just my refusal to learn it, since like you said...DAW's exist.

I could never get past the hideous UI, especially when the buttons were done in pastels.

I prefer this, for when I don't want to open SoundForge, and wait for it to load my insane amount of plugins:

I'm always blown away whenever Audacity is discussed on places like this, by how many people talk mad shit on this free, open source software because "There are so many better DAWs out there"< when it never ever has tried to be or claimed to be a DAW ever in the first place. Its a WAVE EDITOR, its for chopping and and messing with sounds if you're being creative, or for conversion/extraction of sound files. People seem to have this idea that "can host VSTs => is a DAW" when that's never been the case. I'm really going to date myself here, but its used for what years ago I would have used Cool Edit for. Its seriously a wonderful piece of software, and I feel so bad for the devs after putting their time and effort to put out this free application, only to have people make complaints that might as well be "Can't send text messages or even make phone calls with it- WORTHLESS"

Exactly - a tool do do specific jobs. Used it a lot for many years. Excellent batch converter with the macro editing etc as well.

Audacity is great.i have no problems with the gui,all functions are easily accessible.it even has spectral editing.Oceanaudio is a poor alternative for Audacity.one thing it lacks is adding loop points,you can use Wavosaur (free) for it.

I actually record/monitor audio via WASAPI in REAPER all the time.
With the default install I mean, no extensions required.

Anyway, I stand by what other users said, about the differences between a standard DAW and a destructive editor. Both definitely have their place

edited: for some reason after quickly reading your post I came to the conclusion you were a REAPER user (which you actually never implied), so I pointed out the WASAPI thing, sorry
