Does anyone know what HDD to use for this? I got a 2.5" HDD and it doesn't fit. :dog:

This is for backup of my SSDs, so I'm looking at 4 TB or more.

Post

in 2.5hdd there's multiple height 'standards' ( everything from 5mm to 19mm) - so measure the HDD you have that doesn't fit and have a guess how much it's too tall by?

samsung sata ssd are generally 7mm ( 860evo sata, 850 pro etc) - in hdd that height is pretty limiting ( looking at the 2.5 barracuda specs that means just the 1 and 2tb models - 3tb and up 15mm which makes sense as they need an extra platter to get the capacity up).

Maybe think about using samsung QVO ssds instead - certainly the cheapest $/tb in ssd right now if you can live with the sustained write speed limits

I ran into the same issue by ordering the 5TB Barracuda which is simply VERY high.

If you know of any HD which is > 4TB and does fit, please let me know.

I use Samsung 860 and 870 SSD and Crucial SSD with no issues.

I use a mixture of Samsung and Crucial SSD's and they fit nicely. I tend to use it as a hot swap for my growing sample library collection, which works nicely.

Yes I'm aware of SSDs that work with Blackmagic. I have 3 myself. This is really only for HDD. I was hoping for a high-capacity HDD?? How else do people archive their SSDs?

I do have a time machine backup to NAS. I was hoping to use CCC in addition to it but CCC doesn't use NAS. So I need a high capacity HDD I can put in the Blackmagic dock.

Found one - 7mm height - Max capacity I could find is 2TB:

Wish they had a 4TB in that form factor. Well, I suppose I could use the 2TB for system image. And the NAS for samples/projects backup. Hmm..

Warning - don't get from Amazon. It looks like the warranty is not honored.

a more conventional form-factor NAS with 3.5" bays - as all the trully large capacity drives (16tb and up) are 3.5" not 2.5"

I was a little brief in my response and thought I would just follow up further.

If you are wanting to create backups of your SSDs then I would have gone the route that jdnz suggested. I have a simple 2 bay Synology NAS with 8tb of useable storage. All my sample libraries are backed up to this thing alongside my projects, both current and archived. Only the stuff I cannot replace is backed up to the cloud.

The use case for the Blackmagic Dock is for hot swapping drives in and out when you want to use them. For example if you have a lot of sample libraries you can hot swap the drives in and out depending on the project you are working on (this is what I do). They are also great for moving material between stations. You may have recorded a load of samples to an SSD and then plug in the drive to the dock and you can edit them in your DAW.

I haven't seen large capacity mechanical drives at a 2.5" form factor, only ones you can find inside laptops that are slow, and quite frankly not safe for long term data archiving.
