Thanks for this generous giveaway!

Meh... comparing the giveaways from Focusrite and Novation, I wished I rather had Focusrite hardware. :P

What the actual Feck......

Got this while trying to install the Creme EQ. There is no way a simple plugin needs to write to the System 32 folder. None.

The Comp installed fine and the EQ installed but needs authorized so I imagine it's because the install was manually aborted.

I'm deleting the whole mess.

Once again I appreciate Focusrite's generosity but Acustica can KMA......

IMPORTANT: Acustica Audio cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage arising directly or indirectly from any error or omission in this manual."

I'd like to think Acustica Audio is an honest company, but it still sends out a red flag.

Every second plugin uses libraries which put stuff in System32. It's really pretty common, and nothing which should alert you.

In this case, it seems to be this: https://software.intel.com/content/www/ ... -dlls.html

And what does that have to do with an EQ?

I put a link in my post. Don't get me wrong, I know nothing about it. All that I know is that a lot of software comes with libraries which put things in system folders. And that it's nothing to be afraid of.

Seems rather odd for an EQ and an on-line software installer.

Between March 25th and May 27th 2021 (4pm GMT), all Plug-in Collective members can download Cream2 – which normally retails for €199 – for free.
nice offer but the Acustica Audio signup process is broken - keeps asking for recaptcha but there is none
Yeah, I've tried a few times and it has never worked.
These are known issues with Acustica's signup process. If you contact the dev, he'll sort it out for you.

Unfortunately, once you then try to deal with the installer, the installation process, and the fairly huge footprint the plug-in requires (both on your hard drive and in CPU usage), you may wonder why you bothered.

Acustica plug-ins are hotly debated here and on other sites, between those who swear by them and those who have trouble using more than a couple of instances of any of their plug-ins. If you keep in mind that they're "convolution-based" plug-ins (even for things like EQ and channel strips), and that even switching screens within a plug-in can seem to take time, then you'll probably be fine.

The way I read it, it has to do with the performance of the plugin.

Maybe you can shoot Acustica an email, and see if they can explain it. If it interests you. I wouldn't worry at all. Looks like a bog standard software library. Again, a lot of software comes with that.

Acustica convolution plugins, no thanks. lol

No they don't and no they shouldn't. That's why my security suite stopped it from writing to the System 32 folder.

This is for a simple EQ. It should not have to write anything to the system 32 folder.

But I've disinfected my system of the whole Acustica mess so no longer a problem for me.

Once again I do thank Focusrite for their continuing generosity as they've given us some real gems in the past but this one is just not for me.

I would think they'd warn people first, instead of just tell everyone they're not responsible if something happens. I really don't care enough about the company or the free plugin to investigate any further. I've already decided not to get it, because of the induced lag of all their products.

But, after reading that warning and seeing them installing things to your Windows directory, and without your knowledge, unless you happen to have security in place, then I'd still believe it's not the best practice for most companies.

I really have no idea what you're on about. As I mentioned, most software comes with libraries which install DLL's to system folder. It's totally normal. You might want to pay more attention next time you install something, and the installer shows you the files which are being installed.

It's your computer, of course.

Regarding the warnings, I heard beta software can kill your cat and eat your dog. ;) There's a disclaimer with basically every audio software that the developers can't be held responsible for damage to your equipment or your health. I don't know if that holds you off installing software. It never held me off, because, I know what it is. Won't hold me off unpacking a new product I bought either, if there are warnings that I could be suffocated if I put the plastic bag over my face...
