AVID just release Pro Tools v2021.3 with macOS 11 Big Sur support.

Looks like there is not much excitement around here, different clientele.

Also boring update :)

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a lot of PT users around here. It was never really a very popular DAW with the hobbyist market to begin with, and the subscription seems to have made it even less so. I still have my PT11 license, but haven't had it installed in probably 5 years.

I think if I was paying the subscription and it was my main DAW, I'd be a little pissed that the self-proclaimed industry leader took this long to get Big Sur compatibility.

If your software can f*ck up big studios and projects, you better take your time and do it right. Besides that I don't think the smart users were jumping on the Big Sure hype train that quick... Installed it and works fine so far. Was a bit afraid of the "HD firmware" update, but went smooth. Not a groundbreaking update but also not a projectbreaking one :D

Yeh, even with the 50% off sale they have on its still £400 for a year (so £800 a year normally :o )...I guess that's nothing if you do this for a living, but pricy for a hobbyist and unnecessary for most songwriters/producers, any DAW will do the job.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Post

This is exactly why I switched to another DAW. Pro Tools is outdated and slow to update.

Anyone tried it on Big Sur yet? Need to know when they will be working properly with the new processors too.

erm, no. that's the pricing for ProTools Ultimate, the top-tier version. Regular PT is £250 a year.

Out of interest, what do people use Pro Tools for, specifically? Is it rather a mix and mastering DAW, or used for general sound production, like something like Cubase? I never quite got what market they cater to.

Its the defacto industry standard in the postproduction and recording industries, and I'd expect most professional companies who do any of that to have it, even if its not their primary tool. Recording, mixing, mastering, sound design, soundtracks for video, etc etc.

It doesnt necessarily overlap as much with the 'typical' KVR-stylee home user market because its not as focussed on the MIDI-based composition etc side of things.

Ah, I just clicked the 50% off banner on the home page, its just that that offer that is Ultimate only...

Pro Tools Regular is closer to £300 a year with tax. Although I guess as this is aimed at 'professionals' you could perhaps claim the tax back....

Thanks, that makes sense, given the name. :)

The 'Pro' actually was short for 'Production' I think, the notion that it stands for 'Professional' seems actually to be weird legacy of reverse-snobbery anti-PT sentiment.

'Ha, I have FruityBunch 2000 , and once nearly got a demo released on my cousin's label, so how dare they call it 'professional'

sorta thing.
