FWIW, I use PT quite a lot for any audio-only design or composition I do, as I consider it the easiest and most elegant to use for my particular way of working. Im still running PT12 at home, but we have the last newest version in our computer labs. I teach it to our students, mostly those doing audio for video, as I can get someone completely unfamiliar with audio up and running with basic editing and mixing in an hour with just 3 tools.

Ah... I didn't know that either. I thought it stood for "Professional" indeed. Funny how forums can influence your perception.whyterabbyt wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 12:56 pmThe 'Pro' actually was short for 'Production' I think, the notion that it stands for 'Professional' seems actually to be weird legacy of reverse-snobbery anti-PT sentiment.
'Ha, I have FruityBunch 2000 , and once nearly got a demo released on my cousin's label, so how dare they call it 'professional'
sorta thing.

Yup. The democratisation of amateurs not needing to use industry-standard (or -priced) tools somehow became diktat amongst a certain mindset that nobody should use those tools. Waves is the other primary example in audio.

I'm one of those weirdo hobbyists who actually likes PT, including its MIDI (it's not fancy, but gets the job done).
Their pricing makes no sense. There's a link in the dropdown menu to purchase a perpetual license, which leads to a page that says no SKU provided/check the link... Why do they have a link to purchase a perpetual license? My understanding was that it's subscription only.
Anyway, I logged in and saw that I can upgrade my PT11 to the latest subscription version for $99/year for the first two years. But, then what? It goes to full price as punishment for being a loyal customer?
I might bite the bullet, since I have a bunch of project ideas from my old Windows machine that I moved to my Mac/Big Sur and wouldn't mind revisiting.

It seems sort of odd to me that many of the plugs/fx that come with pro tools are 'AIR' and yet they seem to be almost given away on the various plug in discount sites.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

They do still also sell the perpetual. You get a year of free updates, then afterwards you can either renew the update part ($199) to continue with another year of updates and support; or just continue using whatever version yours stopped at. Like what Bitwig does now. You never lose it and it doesn’t stop working once the year is up, unlike a subscription in which PT will expire unless you keep renewing.cryophonik wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 3:36 pm I'm one of those weirdo hobbyists who actually likes PT, including its MIDI (it's not fancy, but gets the job done).

The documentary Sound City has some interesting history bits on PT.

I've never understood this. But for what myself and our team use it for I wouldn't really like to use anything else. Don't think I would use it for composition, but mixing, recording, comping it's so easy to use and much more powerful than it's given credit for.whyterabbyt wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 1:12 pm Yup.
