Is there a way to compress every frequency?

Yep, it's called multiband compression -- you apply different compression to different ranges of frequencies. There are quite a few choices, but I tend to grab TDR Nova (not quite the same thing, but close enough). I'm sure the next dozen replies will have other excellent choices.

I don´t really know what you´re after but a "standard" digital or analog compressor makes compression in the full spectrum, so all frequencies.
Maybe a spectral compressor is what you´re looking for. oeksound soothe is great in that way, i recall TBProAudio DSEQ too.

Every frequency is not possible. We're always bound to a certain blocksize or processing resolution.

But yes, these things then can be done with spectral compressors. Voxengo soniformer already has more than the usual 5 or 6 bands. TBProAudio DSEQ I htink.

if you maximize the audio to turn it into a square wave then put a compressor on it you'll have all frequencies compressed and it'll sound amazing.

There used to be some racks for live that separated ranges of frequencies for fx to be applied to. Still have em in my library.I imagine other daws might include a tool like that by now

Yes, multiband is excellent.

For lots of material a standard compressor or limiter will do the trick, multibands are generally more transparent.

Most multibands are 3-5 bands which works quite well.
A different compressor for every band, well thats just not necessary.

At first I thought a spectral/multi-band limiter/clipper would be more your thing, but then I remembered we are not looking at the wavefrom, but the frequency plot :lol:

Can you even do that without creating crazy harmonics?

Fabfilter Pro-MB is my goto for frequency-selective compression - but compression alone will never get it that uniformly, brickwall flat. You need brute force for this task and I don't think it'll sound great unless you're sound designing.

srsly though.. check out mspectral dynamics from Melda productions. also there's some other spectral processing things that you might find interesting if you're after messing with the individual slivers of sounds. the soundhack spectral shapers bundle for example.. there's some stuff you can do in unfiltered audio's SpecOps as well that you might like.

it's a fun place to look for sound manipulation as it can lead to nice discoveries.

You could do it to a certain degree with spectral clipping or spectral contrasting, but you'd be exchanging time domain response to get the frequency resolution you are asking for. Meaning, your transients and any attacks will sound like shit, and your tails will sound like reverb

You don't get anything for nowt in the digital domain. Always trading one for the other

A massive amount of discrete frequency bands to be compressed individually is usually called a "spectral compander". There is one built into UA spec ops. The key to using something like this in a useful way for mixing is the ability to set the threshold for all bands as well. Soundhack has one that allows for freely drawing the threshold over the spectrum. Outside of sound design applications, a very little bit goes a very long way. Demo Mspectraldynamics and the soundhack spectral shapers. See what they do for you.

DSM v3 ("dynamic spectrum mapper) is designed to do this sort of thing without sounding horrible.
